Suggest a Router for TPG Internet

The router that I have got now came from TPG and its been 2 years, it keeps disconnecting now-a-days. I want to get a router under $100 but cant find decent ones. This is the one I have got right now

The filter seems fine, I think the router is not at its best condition right now. I want to upgrade. All the other posts I seem to find about this are quite old.

      How much was it?

It was a gift and also I think the model is no longer sold, but a quick search shows current models starting at just over $50.

        • are you with TPG? was it easy to set it up?

        • +1

@yummycoot: No, iiNet, but ADSL isn't that hard to set up. Yeah I know TPG owns iiNet now but brandings are still separate.

        • @greenpossum: what kind of router speeds would you suggest? upto 300mbps or more?

@yummycoot: Do you have any equipment that handles ac speeds and do you care? If not then n is the least you should settle for.

        • @greenpossum: i dont think i have any equipment of that sort.

          @yummycoot:

To determine whether you have an Wifi AC devices, run thru this checklist:

          Do you have

          1. A flagship mobile phone or iPhone made in the last 3 years? If so, you might have wireless AC
          2. A laptop or tablet around <3 years in age? If so, you might have wireless AC
          3. an Xbox One? The Xbox One supports Wifi AC modulation when it's firmware was updated in 2014.

In either case, if you plan to upgrade your tablet, mobile or any other device that supports Wifi in the near future, it's a good idea to have Wifi AC with 5ghz dual band (although it isn't neccessary, it gives you an option to fall back on if 2.4ghz airwaves is too 'noisy' or crowded).

You don't have to spend that much either, even the budget TPLINK Archer D7 router which on sale goes for $120 is a very good option, it's been on sale many times already.

@scrimshaw: Agreed, I'd stretch your budget to $120 and get the Archer D7 router. If you have it for another 3+ years you'll utilise the wifi AC surely.

        • @scrimshaw: oh, i see. I have lots then.

You're better off asking this question on whirlpool.
    I can vouch for TP-Link N600

Was using Billion BiPAC 7300N for more than 6 years (with TPG) and it was slowing down. Replaced it with TP-Link Archer D9 AC1900. With about 6 devices connected, I find it to be now ok in the rooms that were earlier had speed issues.

    • Same here. I had 7300n and the Wifi chip started to die. Went with the same Archer D9 too :)

Just a suggestion but you could always just purchase a seperate ADSL modem / router and reuse the original router.

I am using one of this with my Netgear Router.

    • how?

Connect using the modem and just plug it into the wan port of your router. If not any point in your router and enable dhcp on the router.

Following! I'm in a similar boat.

How hard is it to swap out the old modem router for a new one?

I've got the original modem supplied by TPG 3 years ago. I think it needs to be upgraded to something better.

But I have hesitated as I am not an IT expert, and can't remember how I configured and got the current modem working with everything.

Not sure about other routers..The TP Link I bought came with a Quick Reference and one of the setup pages had the list of most of the providers (including TPG). All I needed was to select TPG and provide the username/password for the provider. I had the modem/router up & running in 5 minutes. Very (Non IT) user friendly..

      • which TP Link model did u buy?

TP-Link Archer D9 AC1900 as in my above comment. Cheers.

You need to have your tpg login details, to put the username and password in the required fields when you set up your modem.

Done, if its just a modem.
Router+modem, just plug in Ethernet cables connecting the computer into the back of the router+modem.

If its a wireless modem just gota set up the wifi password (and name of wifi) and connect the devices once
