Is it even localised for Australia?

    • No, but a fair few things still work from Oz (weather, time zone, metric units) and it generally understands my aussie drawl.

I haven't got the nearby restaurants feature or uber ordering to work yet.. Still thinks I'm in Texas, nor have I finished coding an Alexa skill that hooks in to the Melbourne public transport timetable API.

  • Founded as an independent company in 1996, Alexa was acquired by Amazon in 1999. Its toolbar collects data on browsing behavior and transmits them to the Alexa website, where they are stored and analyzed, forming the basis for the company's web traffic reporting.

    Is that you David Kalisch???

Would wait and see what the Google Home device provides.

If nothing else, Amazon are going to likely have to cut prices.

    • No release date for a Google home yet though.
      Thanks for the heads up

Nope, but Google Home needs Google Assistant - and Google Assistant looks to be tied in with Nougat and the new Nexus Launcher - which means it's likely to get launched at the same time as the new Nexuses. That seems to be from this month to early Oct.

Sure it could be later, and we are talking about Google here, but I'm guessing early September.

Oh, and Google Allo incorporates some measure of Google Assistant, and that's due "later this summer". Again, although they could hold off on Google Home, it's more likely that this interconnected set of stuff all gets launched at the same time.

    • I'm excited by the pricing reduction possibilities but would never use one myself.

I have enough issues with an always-on mic phoning home to Amazon. To Google? Hell no.
