Which iPhone if You Must Get One Today?

My wife's iPhone 5c decided to close its eyes and RIP this week.

There are phones with better price and specs.
Choice is limited to an iPhone because she is a "comfortable".

No need to be the latest.

I was to buy one outright eg. iPhone 5s for around $400.
But it seems more economical to join plan x 24 months at $40/month unlimited calls + $0 phone. Currently paying $30 unlimited Virgin.

Only thing is knowing iPhone 7 coming, iPhone 6 range price may be softened. It is not till Sep or Oct, so think may be too long to wait.

If you must decide an iPhone today, which one would you pick
(all based on 16GB for comparison)

Thanks.

I would try to negotiate an iPhone SE through your phone company for free, you'd be surprised what deal they can offer if you sign up for a new 24 month contract/plan.

    • wow…real ozbargainer, thought it was all black/white. anyone has any success story re negotiation, esp Virgin?

Not with Virgin, but I recently negotiated an iPhone SE for $0/month for my mother through Telstra.

  • grab the cheapest iPhone 5S you can off ebay, gumtree or elsewhere

use that until the iPhone 7 comes out

then buy an iPhone 6 or 6S from one of the many sheep who will throw them in the bin to upgrade to the 7

this is what im waiting to do for my girlfriend, who unfortunately has the same "comfortableness" disorder that yours has (would have gotten her a top spec android phone long ago otherwise). thankfully her iphone 6 is still hanging in there (although since its a 16gb model, its all but useless these days).

Not sure what your $30 unlimited plan includes, but the $40 plan on Virgin only has 1gb of data. Is that going to be enough?

    • she has been ok with 1GB, just to avoid watching video. wifi at home.

  • Get the absolute cheapest one you can[1], second hand, refurb, import, whatever. Hold out however you can until mid-September when the 7 comes out and then get 32gb+ outright.

OR get the 6s (or + if preferred by wife, don't just buy this without checking, it needs to fit in handbag, etc) on a contract if you really want.

    [1] Like 5c $250

Ever thought of getting the 5c repaired (replaced) at Apple. This "highest" cost for the 5c repair at Apple is A$218.95

Then its just like a new phone as the battery is also replaced and has waranty rather than secondhand phones etc

Then you can wait out to see what happens with pricing when the new phones arrive

    • thanks, will look into it if only $218. phone is out of warranty. phone shop checked it and said couldn't fix it.

It only costs time for them to look at it and you maybe surprised. They dont 'repair" them, they replace them. The replacements are refurbished or even new.

The phone shops only fix common issues like broken switch or screens.

If Apple cant or wont replace, you at least know and apart from the time, you arent worse off than you are now.

You are best to make a booking via the web for a time to take in, that saves a lot of waiting.

We replaced two dead/faulty units about 2 years ago, both are still motoring along fine

        Good Luck

  • iPhone SE. Best value for someone that doesn't care about bigger screen or 3D Touch.

  • I used to specialize in mobility and a common problem users would get is the device would not turn on. There is an easy fix, that most people don't try and think a new/replacement is required.

What are the symptoms of your phone not working?

    • black screen. hold on the on button may give a very very faint white light for 1/10 of a second. phone shop says no luck to repair.

Have you tried holding down both buttons whilst the phone is plugged in?

Generally I have found if its a faint light or the screen lights up and fades to black could be related to water ingress

        • exactly. but wife said no and likely (water ingress).

iPhone SE is currently around $520 with DSE/kogan ebay deal. Much better than 5s. But bring ur 5c to Apple Store first, u'll be surprise that sometimes they did it for free even out of warranty one. I did it 4-5 months ago, phone from kogan, out of warranty. They said battery was faulty, so the staff asked me if he can replace my phone for free. Of course, I said yes :)

  • Just an update, want to thank all who comment/follow.

AppleStore had a look. It did not come to my mind wife's phone had changed the display once and fixed by AppleStote who may cover under warranty. On the other hand, she cracked the screen last year and brought and fixed by phone repair stall. So the chance of getting a free replacement phone was void as screen was fixed by 3rd party.

Looking back at the scenerio, would you pay about $279 for Apple tor $100 for 3rd party to fix the cracked screen?

Decided on SE 64G Virgin based on your poll.

Heard 6S plan for Voda has just gone up.

    • Let's say. iPhone 5s only cost $379 and iPhone 5c is outdated and slowing down.
I will go for SE in this case, 6s if you need a bigger screen.
