PC Build Recomendation

I was an avid gamer up until 4years ago, when my first child came along.

I ditched the PC, bought a laptop for "flexibility" and a PS3 for gaming at night.

I've now reached a point where my laptop sucks and all the games I want are PC/PS4, so I've decided to go back to a decent PC. But 4 years is forever and I feel I am out of the loop. last build was an e8500 OC'd as far as I could get it with 2x8800gt's in sli (yeah it's been that long!)

I use lightroom mainly, with the VERY occasional Photoshop and it is on export of the files that my laptop dies (It's an old gen i7 w/16gb ram and heats the room when doing anything more then web browsing). I want to start getting pack into PC gaming, monitor is a Dell U2515h (25" 2560 x 1440 at 60Hz).

Intel Core i7 6700
Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1080 WindForce OC 8GB
MSI Z170M Mortar Motherboard
G.Skill Ripjaws 4 F4-2400C15Q-32GRK 32GB (4x8GB) DDR4
Samsung 850 EVO 250GB SSD
Seagate Barracuda 2TB ST2000DM001
EVGA SuperNOVA G2 Gold 650W Power Supply
Phanteks Eclipse P400S Window Glacier White

Also tossing up if i need a decent cpu cooler

  • If you don't plan to overclock (non K processor) then you don't need a Z motherboard. You can also save a few bucks and use the stock cooler that comes with the CPU but I think its worth it even if its just for the looks.

    • I went the Z for a couple features: m.2 (to use later on to store Lightroom preview files), optical out and the faster ram rating (not sure if that will be an issue though). The case is closed, so wont see the cpu cooler, but was thinking the Noctua NH-U12S.

I just built a PC (a month ago) and am currently waiting for the 480/1060 price to come down before I get a graphics card.
    A couple of points:
    - I always recommend saving money - you can spend the money you saved on parts down the line :)
    - I'm doing this from memory - my speeds may be off slightly but look up benchmarks
    - Check out logicalincrements.com

    The following is personal opinion

    Intel Core i7 6700
Do you really need the i7? It has slower clock speed/Much greater price then the i5 and i3. In fact, the i3 clocked at 4.4Ghz beats an i5 @3.6Ghz for GAMING performance. Note that intel wants your money - they try and sell the i7 as the "Minimum" for gaming. Don't trust anyone that wants your cash. Personally I have the i5 6500, the only reason I didn't grab the i3 was compilation performance.

Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1080 WindForce OC 8GB
I don't know much about this card, but saving money in other areas to spend big on your card is the best gaming strategy IMO.

    MSI Z170M Mortar Motherboard
I have an Asus z170 mobo, it works great. Keep an eye on USB3.1 or Lightning ports if you're into that. USB3.0 is pretty damm fast though…
You <may> need to patch a windows 7 install USB in order for your keyboard to work during install.

    G.Skill Ripjaws 4 F4-2400C15Q-32GRK 32GB (4x8GB) DDR4
You don't need "Gaming" ram. Buy ram based on speed and price unless you're going for the look. I put a single(!!!!) 8GB stick in mine, to upgrade to 16GB when I get some cash… 8GB should run almost any game tho. 32 GB seems Crazy unless you're running VM's.

    Samsung 850 EVO 250GB SSD
Crucial make some good SSD's for much less then the 850 EVO series and comparable speeds.

    Seagate Barracuda 2TB ST2000DM001
    A good choice.

EVGA SuperNOVA G2 Gold 650W Power Supply
IMO the "Gold" rated PSU's aren't worth it… But it's an area to be safe rather then cheap.

Phanteks Eclipse P400S Window Glacier White
If you like the case then get it, if no one will see it then just get a black box and $ave (Corsair do some understated designs)

    • Good Points, there are a lot of "want" more than "need" in this list

CPU - Don't know? what is the actual difference?

Graphics - Was the cheapest gtx1080 on the list, have since changed to the EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 FTW Gaming ACX 3.0 8GB

Motherboard - I really can't see any difference between all of them (in the z170 range) other than ports (usb, sata, etc). Which Asus board do you have?

Ram - ws the cheapest 32gb 'pack' that was on the supported list for that motherboard. memory is cheap, so didn't think much more than that.

SSD - again, small difference in price, have a Samsung now and have not had issues.

PSU - I was actually looking at the "Be Quiet! Pure Power 9 600W CM Power Supply" but is unavailable and no ETA. I don't much care about bronze/silver/gold rating either

Case - I'm still up in the air on this one. I want one that is on the quite side and not "flashy", so it doesn't attract my kids attention (3 under 3). I like the idea of the filters also.

      • Someone mentioned it later but the i5 6500 is a great choice for less!

The GTX 1060 and RX 480 can both play 1080p at 60Hz, most new games. If you're playing 1080p why not look at those?

I lied! I have an ASRock Z170-Pro4 Motherboard. Available from PCCG

Yes, memory is cheap, but PC case gear has $45 8gb ddr4 sticks. Save $90 and get two.

        I used a bronze EVGA 600w unit.

Corsair Carbide 200R is a black box case which I found super easy to work with.
On cases, I recommended against mini/micro ATX cases. Can be super hard to work with.

        • Some good advice.

Just to add…if you are going to game at 1080p, at least game at 120Hz+. If you are playing at 60Hz, you may as well be playing on a console.

  • bigger ssd/s - get a 120gb for the OS and a 1tb for progs

    cpu - i5-6500

    cheaper case

    • at the extreme end i am also considering the Thermaltake Black Core V1 Mini ITX Chassis. cheaper
I have a ~120 ssd in my laptop I am going to pull out and use for the OS, the 250 was for programs, which looking at my current setup, I have stuff all! would 1tb be overkill for a program/game drive?

so i5-6500 and not the k version?

      • personally, get the 6500, get a cheaper gpu, cheaper box, 16gb ram, your 120ssd for OS and 1tb for progs….IMO

        • Thanks for the advice!

  • what monitor are you using? gtx1080 is overkill unless your 4k or vr
    but still totally awesome

    • sorry you did say 1440 - still a little overkill

      • Very overkill, I am hoping to get into VR later on this year/early next but not 100%.

        • +1

PC gaming has been held back by consoles in the last half decade actually. I'd say that until the Xbox and Sony PS are fully VR compatible and can provide a rich, immersive VR experience, we won't get much content to play with on the PC.

let's say you are Activision. You're making Call of Duty VR Edition, but you have a 50% market share on the PC and 50% market share on the Consoles. However most console players don't have VR due to lack of $$ or don't want it, and there are only about 5% of PC's out there that are actually capable of pushing VR — so the sad state is, the game isn't profitable to make because barely anyone has a VR headset.

While the current Pascal and Polaris GPU's are already tuned for VR, Ps4 and Xbox Ones are not (hardware is under-powered), and that is the problem. I don't think VR will be mainstream until we get a new generation of consoles and headsets to match.

        • @scrimshaw: Good points! thanks!
