Remember wasting—errr… spending—hundreds of hours saving the world from a homicidal former British spy armed with the means to control a killer satellite?

Of course you do. GoldenEye 007 is arguably the best game for the Nintendo 64 system, and some might say the top game of the 1990s.

Developers who were die-hard fans of the game have released GoldenEye: Source, a completely updated (free) version of the game, so that everyone can relieve the magic of N64’s James Bond epic. The game’s designers say they’ve stayed as faithful to the original as possible—though for now, you can’t play in single-player mode.

GoldenEye: 007 was one of the original first-person shooter games, and paved the way for many modern iterations of the style. The original N64 release sold more than 8 million copies—making it the third all-time bestselling game for the system—and created a legion of die-hard fans.

GoldenEye: Source took over a decade to finish. The project started as a simple game update, meant to help correct a few areas where the original game fell short. Tens of thousands of man hours later—and an Olympic dedication to seeing the project through—players can enter the game, battle Alec Trevelyan and save Natalya Simonova once again. The game has improved graphics, 25 new maps, an updated slate of weapons and 10 functional multiplayer modes, and all 28 weapons from the 1997 classic to play around with. It'll all run on a pretty modest PC setup too.

Yep sure do, big head mode, paintball mode….loved it!

come to think of it I also used 007:Agent Under Fire to softmod the original xbox lol

  • Great game, I used to play this many years ago. After an update there were would be a few people on but then it would always die out pretty soon after.

  • Oh so in the end it was to stop some satellite? I never got pass that aztec one where you launch the rocket to space, without dying that wasn't obtained by cheating. Always kept dying, and using invincibility cheat didn't help progress either, though I did manage to beat it with that on….hahahaha There was this one last box level that was still greyed out after the aztec one that I couldn't get. Oh well, it was fun to play and play against people.

  • Do you need Steam for this? Or some base game?

    • Wait… found it…

Is the mod available on Steam?

Whilst the game both requires and runs through Steam, the mod is not available for download via the Steam store due to legal reasons.

      EDIT:
Still nothing about having any other game installed first. Not sure if this will appear in your Steam library, or if you just have to find the .exe and run that.

      See: http://www.geshl2.com/faq/

      EDIT 2:
No need for a base game. Just the SDK. The installer puts the game in your library.
