Fast Enough Intel Stick (or Equivalents) to Run MAME

Want to buy a small tiny computer stick like the Intel Stick or equivalents to connect to TV to run emulators like MAME, need to support BT and usb for the controllers.
The bottom line is it has to run smooth (no frame skipping) on 3D games like Street Fighter EX/EX2.
Are the products on the market now powerful enough to do that? Or I will have to wait for another generation?
Thanks

  • Doesn look like it's laggy even with the First-gen compute stick.

The Intel stick is probably not a very good choice, for a number of reasons, it doesn't have enough USB ports and it tends to overheat.

You might be better off with a cheap chinese Cherry Trail box as they are more powerful and comes with 2-4 ports, but beware you don't end up getting one with no pre-activated Windows license.

  • I too am interested in having a home arcade. Will you be using an arcade joystick?

    • Sorry to hijack this thread, but do you need to find the games too for these emulators or is there a bundle download somewhere?

      • Obviously you would only be downloading ones that are backups of games you have legitimate licences for. Like the megadrive cartridges gathering dust in my draw since the system died.
I found a google search for emulator rom or MAME rom and the name of the game you want will find those.
There may also be torrents of bundled roms, but that might give you licensing headaches.

  • Retropie has this all ready to go on a Raspberry pi box. The latest version is a pretty powerful machine for under $60, and there are youtube clips of play so you can judge the performance yourself.
I have seen some comments elsewhere that the BT controllers have a tiny lag compared to wired, so that is worth considering too.

  • Thanks for the youtube link. I dont know if BayTrail is much worse than CherryTrail because I have a BayTrail tab on Windows 10 with 2G ram and the Street Fighter EX game was lag to hell when running on MAME. It looks pretty good if the CherryTrail does make a huge difference here.

The overheat point is worth considering too, I hope there are some products that come with a fan to help releasing the heat, I don't care about the quietness as the game sound easily covers the fan noise.

Yup saw the pi3 too but also heard the configuration is way too complicated. Cant compare to double clicking an exe. And yeah, sure will use an arcade joystick, otherwise it is missing out one of the best parts of home arcade!

    • Can I ask which stick? I'm finding it hard to justify the purchase of the X-Arcade Tankstick!

      • Nah, not that fancy. Mine ones are just PS3 hori fighting sticks.
