  • Is it plastic or cardboard?

    • +6

      Sigh

You're here all week huh? :P

      • +3

Sorry if there is some long running joke or contraversy, I have totally missed it as its only now I have considered a VR set.

        • +2

Sorry, I guess I thought it was a joke lol

It's made of plastic, the 'Cardboard' part is just referring to the Google Cardboard, the early model of this sort of tech :)

I've taken it out of the title, doesn't need to be there :)

        • @Spackbace: how does this differ to Samsung gear vr? Can it do gear vr stuff?

        • @Spackbace: thanks man, so this deal is crap then?
I did try vr2, it was fantastic, although my s6 battery dies in less than an hour. It left me wanting more.

        • @fm:

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/262032

          It's been bested lol

Frankly for under $10, I'd happily try this over Google Cardboard. At least this unit is nicer to get out and show it to people than a folded piece of cardboard lol :)

I bought one of these not long ago when they were $12.50 from DD4. Apart from the scratches on the lens lol, they do the job. The 3D porn movies are awesome lol. Wish these were around when I was a teenager. I'd have a lot more money in my bank account haha

    • +1

The 3D porn movies are awesome lol.

What? They even include that in the package?! o.O that's a bit worrying

      • Not in this package

    • +1

Thanks, I thought I didn't have any use for this, but now I know better! SOLD!

  • +1

Tempted to grab one just to check out that Bluetooth controller, not many buttons, but if I could play a couple of basic games with it, as a key ring, it's a pretty sweet accessory.

I've got like 20 VR headsets already, from abusing the eBay Myer thing, buying as way better one in K-Mart ages ago, and a couple of other promotional things, though.

    • +2

The controllers are available separately on ebay etc. for about $6.

      • Oh, I was unaware they were so cheap, I'd seen them around before but thought they were around 15 or so. That's not half bad, even just to pick one up out of curiosity, cheers man!

  • Should I get this or wait for Daydream? I already have a Cardboard set at home but that doesn't fit my Nexus 6P (It fits my Nexus 5 but I don't use that anymore).

    • It has to be an extremely new phone for you to be able to use Daydream VR. Like it must have come out in the last month.

      • From what I've read the nexus 6p will be compatible with Daydream.

        • It's not technically daydream-ready. The ZTE phone is the only confirmed phone out right now that is daydream-ready. Phones like Nexus 6P are possibly daydream-compatible. Maybe missing some sort of required censors. This means they're not daydream-ready, but close enough. So there may be some compromises using it.

      • Expectation is you'll still be able to use older phones, just with lower quality. Otherwise it would limit their market massively.

And the point is that the headset and controller combo that DayDream uses will likely end up the standard (so this won't be supported).

not a big issue but alike many of these sites the conversion rate is not 100% .. my transaction experience for this product, it shows $8.45AUD on the checkout page .. however when I go to paypal it defaults to USD $6.49 (which with paypal conversion is $8.84) for the sake of 40ish cents more its worth complaining about, but thought I would share it with you either way.

    • +1

Title fixed, cheers for the heads up :)

here's the review if you are interested https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zheOfAEIlg8

  • +4

The one in the deal, or this one? http://www.dd4.com/goods/New-Virtual-Reality-VR-BOX-II-2.0-V…

    Here's a YouTube review of it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=alPGFh8sAGo

The difference is less than $4, but it looks like this is better than the white one in the deal.

Also, can someone comment on the quality of these Xiaomi Piston 3 basic edition in-ear headphones? http://www.dd4.com/goods/Original-Xiaomi-Piston-3-Mi-InEar-H…
Never had Xiaomi ear/headphones before and I am in the market for cheaper, but good ones.

    • What's the difference between the two?

      • Not really sure. I was initially referring to YouTube reviews, but I've seen on two videos where some commenters were saying the VR BOX 2.0 is better.

        • You mean the videos said the one in this deal is better?

        • @Stix: If you search both names (VR BOX vs VR Shinecon), you'll see videos of reviewers comparing the two. I found the comments and reviews kinda mixed. Some say the one in the deal is better, and others say the one in the link I posted above is better. You better have to look them up and then decide which one to go for.

    • Agreed, have bought the black one. It seems a better build (for about 50% more I guess that's expected).

    • So anyone got any ideas which one would be better to get? The one that AussieDaddy linked or the current VR Box 2.0?

      • I've watched couple of videos on YouTube and kinda liked this other one better, but to decide which one to buy I think you've to go on YouTube and have a look at the reviews posted there. I saw couple of people saying VR Box 2.0 is better and others saying the other one. Not sure 100%.

    • I have the "standard" edition Xiaomi Piston 3's and they are excellent value for money.
To me they sound better than my old Sennheiser's. Definitely worth picking up.

      • Thanks, mate. Appreciate it.

    • Not worth the risk. THe store rep got only 83.3% positive feedback

  • How do you run VR? How does your phone know when it's in VR mode?

    • +2

There are a number of VR apps/games and apparently, porn, judging from the comments up thread. When you run these, the display splits into two and works with the headset.
You can download the apps and give it a try, just hold your phone in front of your face as you turn around to get an idea of how it works, what the performance is like etc. It won't give you the immersive stereoscopic vision without the lenses in the headset, but you can see how it works.

  • thanks! looking fwd to it arriving

  • These things are sold cheaper on Taobao which suggests that this is not that good of a price. And the ones on taobao comes with 4000 hours of free VR porn (pirated of course)

    • +1

And the ones on taobao comes with 4000 hours of free VR porn

Mind to share the link, mate? :)

    • +3

If you made a job of it and watched 8 hours a day, Monday to Friday, it would take just under two years to get through that.
Not sure how you find the time, but I salute your dedication.

As we don't know how much cheaper they are, it's hard to compare, and obviously Taobao don't incorporate international shipping costs into it

      • +1

        But… there's 4000 hours of good stuff!!

        • +1

I'm sorry, but have you heard of the internet lately…?

And Chinese stuff ain't gonna be good ;) And likely censored…!

Or so a friend tells me

      • The price difference is marginal but international shipping is not at all expensive from China using air mail. Take a look at the large quantities of one dollar stuff you can find easily on ebay/alibaba/gearbest etc.

  • +3

The DD4 site always gives me problem when trying to access it.

    • Had the same problem with chrome, works alright with firefox.

  • Payment came to $9.26 for me.

    • Same here…price go up to USD6.80?

      • Yeah, but still a good deal.

      • Hmm at what stage? Was just showing AU$8.85 right up to account creation

        • USD6.80 is AU$8.85, without the paypal rip-off rate.

          $6.49 is an error.

    • Mine came up as $9.16

    • $8.87 on my credit card..

  • Do these work for SBS 3d movies without running vr apps?

    • You'll want a dedicated sbs app, or it will be squished to an 8:9 aspect.

  • Why pay $8.85 when you can get it for $8.45 http://www.dd4.com/goods/VR-BOX-2.0-Cardboard-VR-Virtual-Rea…

Up to you :) I would probably trust this seller more, but entirely up to you:

      Sold By
      Best999
      4666 Transactions
      94.49% Positive feedback

      Sold By
      Sweethome
      663 Transactions
      95.83% Positive feedback

      • I agree with you, mods can you please remove my link as the seller is not that trusted.

      • Trust which more? Looks like Sweethome has more positive feedback and is cheaper, compared the two.

        • Depends which way you look at it, 1 has sold ~6x more than the other

        • @Spackbace: Well, for how long has each one of them been in the business though? I mean, if one had an online business for , hypothetically speaking, 5 years and the other one for just 2 years, it's only reasonable that the one who has been in the business longer to have sold more items, isn't it? I really do not know who the better one between the two is, and am not entirely sure how the rating system of that site works, but I was going by the two feedback ratings of the two sellers you've posted.

        • +1

          @AussieDaddy:

I don't know how their ranking system works, but 1 is Grade 6 and 1 is Grade 2

          I dunno lol frankly it's $0.40 or so, toss a coin :P

        • +2

@Spackbace: Yep! I am here bored and just wanted to say something for the sake of saying. :)

        • @AussieDaddy: I ordered from them. I figured the original supplier will have a delay trying to ship out like 100 of these. The other seller has sold the VR set 30 times before so I'm assuming it should be ok.

        • +1

@BlazinPast: That's a smart way to look at it. Ta

        • @Spackbace:

Do you have a 50 cent coin I can borrow?

        • @tranqme:

Sure, come here I'll chuck it to you

      • Ordered from Sweethome last weekend. Order status still shows as "pending shipment".
Does anyone know how long would it take to get the product delivered from them?

        • +1

finally the box has arrived. box may have been opened as some of the documentation seemed to be missing. not sure if the packaging is different for different countries but if you compare it with the one from various unboxing reviews, you can notice some subtle differences in contents like user manual some other printed material but overall turned out to be a quite a good deal as both box and remote arrived in time and are working :D

  • What size phones do these support?

    • Scroll down a bit under features it says: "Suitable for almost all kinds of smart phones ( Android / IOS, etc) that screen between 3.5 - 6.0 inches"

Website is a bit dodge but I placed an order with Paypal payment method.
    Let's see how it goes.
    I order $12.80 one.

How long does it takes to delivery?

    • I bought mine from Best999 and it did take 4 weeks to arrive. I am in Western Australia Regional though. Not the fastest but it did get here. I just ordered 3 more with this deal as well.

Bought one OP - came up $9.16 with PayPal , lets see how it goes :)

    Not sure how or why…

    • I don't mean to be invasive, but, between the 1st of August and today the 18th, is that how much you spent? Or this is one of many accounts? I wish I could spend that small amount for two days, let alone 18 days. lol Probably you're student and you don't pay rent or other expenses, it seems. Enjoy it while you can, mate.

      • I use this account exclusevely for online and TPG bills charged to Altitude Mastercard as Amex has a surcharge. For Opal and Woolies use e-gift cards. For all else ING until they stop the cashback.

        • O, I see. That makes sense then. I don't use CCs at all so I am not entirely sure how that world works. I have been using Debit Cards as far as I can remember (well, since CommBank introduced them). :)
