Do I have to have travel insurance to get onto p&o cruise to go to south Pacific please?

Do I have to purchase it? If so what is the cheapest one?

Also, what is the cheapest way to get access to internet?

No, you don't need travel insurance to visit somewhere.

But I'd recommend getting travel insurance. It's not expensive and worth it. We paid $30 more and paid $0 excess.

We got sea sick due to the choppy Waters and were able to claim the injection cost.

Dropped phone on the ground and broke the screen. Was able to claim that

    • Which insurance did you get please? We are planning to travel to gold coast as well.

Stay away from the internet! It's the joy of the cruise, just disconnecting from everything.

Travel insurance not required, up to you.
We didn't have it, probably should but just forgot… and didn't need it in the end.

The internet is slow and expensive ….loved being disconnected from the world for a week. If you have to have it then it is available on board.

I never travel without insurance, but it's like any insurance …you don't need it until something bad happens. I use the insurance that comes with my credit card and I register my son's food allergy as a pre-existing condition.

I got cruise cover online from insureandgo. We didn't get into a port on our Carribbean cruise because of bad weather and we claimed on the missed port part of the policy and got about $1k for that. Also dropped my camera in the sand and got covered for that. It's easy to get sick on a cruise or fall down the stairs or have an accident at a port (where often there are no seat belts if you get local transport). If you incur the cost of medical treatment and then need to fly home, it will cost you a fortune. Try the coupon code GROUPON20 to see if you can get 20% off.

If you really need the Internet the bes option is a cafe in port.

You'd be crazy to leave our Medicare sponsored shores without travel insurance of some sort…cruise lines aren't immune to issues: http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-06-21/vanuatu-bus-crash-kill…

I'm a big fan of Covermore, very reasonable prices & they've never stuffed us around on the few claims we've made over the years. Somebody on here also said recently that Australia Post resells Covermore policies cheaper than direct, so I'd give that a whirl.

Yes, medivac from ship is expensive. Buy insurance on net, not from travel agent

You don't have to if you're not worried about things happening to you.

I went on a 11-night cruise (also South Pacific!) in May, didn't get travel insurance, and was alright. But then I generally don't get travel insurance for short trips anyway, it's just what I'm used to doing.

Which islands are you going to? We bought a SIM card in Vanuatu because that was 4 of our 5 ports, and used it when it was available. Your phone has to be unlocked from any other provider. We chose Digicel, which gave us 200MB and 400 Vatu of calls for 700 Vatu (about 8.50AUD). We actually got a French Mother's Day bonus so we got 400MB, but don't count on there being a promo when you're there. 200 Vatu for the data package + 500 Vatu for the SIM card. An alternative is the Tourism SIM (1GB) for 1000 Vatu, but I can't find info about this on their website. We went with the cheaper option since didn't expect to use that much, ended up using about 280MB or so. Didn't use the calls, but the internet reception was okay. Especially with the larger ports, it was available on board for hours even after leaving the port. Probably traveled close to shore/a cell tower.

    Champagne Bay, Mystery Island: G

P&O only "strongly recommend" insurance in their T&Cs…I have been on 17 cruises and only use the complimentary Insurance included on NAB Platinum Credit card…it is included when you purchase any component of overseas travel, air or sea when you pay $500 directly by your card…we usually pay the $500 as the deposit (most times they charge 1.5% surcharge $7.50) which is the cheapest Travel Insurance you can get…our annual fee for NAB Platinum is $30, so I guess purist will calculate part of that as cost too.

Be careful with some activities…ice skating and other 'winter'sports need extra cover.

Do not cruise without it…it is too big a gamble if you're not prepared to pay $1000's if something goes wrong.

Most cruisies use Covermore because they have a simple online application that has an 'existing conditions' calculator.

Have a look around CruiseCritic and also do a search on Facebook for your cruise….lots of info out there.

  • Have to? No. Should you? Weellll…..

People tell me I'm a nutjob because I don't buy car insurance. I think people are nutjobs when they don't buy travel insurance. Different people, different experiences, different views.

My view is that, without Medicare, if anything minor happens to me then travel insurance will pay for it self and many folds over. Cruises especially, one clinic / pharmacist on board so you can't exactly find your nearest Chemist Warehouse for those prescriptions. Sh$t gets worse and you need to be airlifted out? Thought an ambo was expensive?

One tip about travel insurance, it's good and all to compare coverages (Medical, dental, belongings, death etc) but I say more important is to read into the fine print and compare how far they are willing to cover you. $1,000,000 cover for belongings is great….until you read the millions of asterixes in the fine print and your cover will only cover you if your phone was strapped to your neck with 3 padlocks and 5 cable ties, not going to be much use.

P.S. The only time travel insurance is 100% needed is when you are doing a tour. Generally speaking, the tour company requires you have medical insurance to both cover their ass and yours. In their terms and conditions they will have clauses stating they can reject your participation even after payment if you do not have sufficient travel insurance. "But I went on this tour that my good mate in Bali organised for me for $5AUD for a day of rafting and I didn't need no travel insurance"….well travel insurance for those won't be much use anyway as most travel insurances will state any tour activity must be with a licensed provider or something along those lines. Also activities =/= tours. Tours are like Trafalgar, APT, Topdeck, Contiki, Globus etc.
