How to Play AVI/MPEG, Etc on This Set Top Box from Ozstock?

Hi member,

Last week, i purchased this item
http://www.ozstock.com.au/1162/High-Def-Set-Top-Box-with-USB…

It said i can play divx, mp3, and avi. Did anyone purchase this item able to play these type of files? On the manual only said media playback (jpeg and mp3).

if anyone able to play divx, avi etc on this set top box. could you please your tips. I can't more information about this set top box on google. IDEAQ HTU-1000. thanks.

The PVR function plays back a variety of common video formats including Divx, MP3, AVI and so on meaning you can use the HTU-1000 as a media player… download content onto your HDD or USB key, plug it in, sit back and enjoy viewing it on your big screen. The record function allows you to record your selected shows in high quality AVI format which can also be viewed, played back and shared.

Dual playback capability means you can also play back recordings in your laptop or PC, as well as TV.

We will also throw in a BONUS 1m HDMI cable.

  • maybe try formating the usb to fat 32 , it does say either ntfs or fat32 though hmm.

or maybe try and format the usb through the unit itself maybe in the menu somehwere then copying files from pc to the usb and play

    • this set top box support ntfs and fat 32. and i have playing around by copying some file from my pc to us. the problem is this set top box doesn't recognized the .avi etc file

      • yes i did note that on your description, perhaps it is the version of avi files, try a few otherwise take it up with the manufacturer or their forums

  • The product page from your link says :

    Video decoder: MPEG4 AVC/H.264 HP@L4, MPEG-2, not divx !?.

If there is any support number, call them and ask about this.

On other note, on your PC, try to play the avi on VLC and see the properties for what video codec is in use. You can also try convert the video to MP4 (h.264) and then see your player can play that.

For the filesystem issue, if you can play mp3 files, the player can read NTFS.

    • i have recorded couple tv show, then i put some files on the same folder of this recorded tv show. when i try to play back the new files, it doesn't show the file on the list.

  • This is incorrectly advertised. It does not play back any type of video apart from ones recorded by the unit itself. They will be either .ts or .mpg format depending how you set the options. They can of course be played on your PC using VLC or anything similar. The Media+ menu can only handle mp3 and jpg files and will show nothing else in the menu. All recordings done on this unit will show in the Record Manager menu. The way the unit records TV programs is by creating a separate folder for each recording within the ALIDVR folder. In the folder there will be 3 files. A file called 000.mpg or 000.ts which is the actual file which you can play on your PC. The other two files are needed for the device to correctly handle the playback of the recording and without these 2 files is unable to do so. They are called 000.dvr and info3.dvr. I understand there is no action being taken at the moment by the manufacturer to release any upgraded firmware to address this which is a pity as it would make this unit quite remarkable for something that sells around the $70 mark. The only other disappointment I have with the unit is that it only offers "once" and "daily" for recording options. "weekly" at least would be nice. But having said that the quality of the image is excellent, it supports timeshift, you can go and watch what is being recorded while it is being recorded at any point in the recording and you can watch another program you have previously recorded on the unit while it is currently recording something else. I think this is a good little box for its price. It appears to be identical to the Kogan unit but by a different manufacturer (IDEAQ). Hope this helps.

    • thanks mate, the seller offer me refund or exchange with other brand laser, but he is not sure if other brand able to play avi. waiting their response

      • I wouldn't swap. I had the Laser first and swapped it for this. Not only would the Laser not read AVI but it would not recognise any of my pocket drives and only recognised FAT32 and not NTFS. Also the firmware was inferior. It would not even tell me how much disk space I had left. Stick with what you have. Cheers

        • thanks for this info mate. coz on ozstock website, it show previously they sell laser for $70, then this ideaq for $66.
last time the seller told me that laser able to play avi, but he is not sure, thats why he will come back to me later.
i am happy with the quality of this set top box. i just want to be able to watch my movie as well via this set top box.
i can't find anything about ideaq on the internet. they don't even got official website.

          • @dragonrabit: The laser unit - which I own, has had recently updated firmware - and now locks into channels better, and the playing of avis is MUCH better. It does require some caressing and patience, but for $50 or $70 I think it's exceptional value. HIGHLY recommended.

Disclaimer - I am not affiliated with this product in any way except for that I own one!
But I do recommend it only for tech-savvy tinkerers, not mom-and-pop types who'll constantly be asking their kids for help about it. They need to spend $400+ on "established" units. IMHO.

  • I have the IDEAQ HTU-1000, it saves files as .mpg which won't play on Windows Media Player or Quicktime Player but,

THE FILES PLAY PERFECTLY ON THE VLC MEDIA PLAYER!!! VLC is a free download, you can Google it.

I've used it for a few years but didn't install it when I recently got a new PC. I installed to see if it would play the IDEAQ .mpg files. I checked all the boxes in the list of installation-options so that it would play every known file-type.

To play the file, right-click on it and select "open with" then choose the VLC player and check the box marked "Always use this program to open this type of file".

    Good Luck :-)

    • Can you please tell me if the Ideaq HTU-1000 would be suitable for an oldie?

Using the EPG, is it easy to find the show you want and set it to record?

      Cheers,
      Rus

      • IMO the Freeview EPG is the easiest one to understand. The colour layout makes it easier to navigate through. Most of these budget PVR ready STBs have EPGs and menus which simply are a block of blue.

      • Like a new mobile-phone, the IDEAQ takes a little getting used to but you can find programs to record well in advance. Its a plain blue screen, like kammo mentioned. BTW, I used to race online with the nickname RussTnuts :-)
