New MacBook Air

Hey, I need to buy a computer as mine is falling apart but I want to wait for the new MacBook Air but I dont think I can wait as my computer wont last that long. Will the new macbook air be more expensive or significantly better (design and specs)? Should I just buy a macbook air now or what?

There's every possibility that there will not be a new MacBook Air. Rumours point to the 12" MacBook remaining as the only small laptop in Apple's range, and the MacBook Pro 13" will be the next largest but will probably be quite expensive.

IMO the current model MacBook Air is not a good deal at all, even with reduced pricing. The screen is rubbish compared to the competition and hardware is outdated and underpowered. There are better options, unless you must have MacOS.

  • The new macbook is the new macbook air. If you can live without usb port then it is a really nice machine.

Otherwise probably be best to wait a few more months until the keenly-anticipated macbook pro comes out.

If you really cannot wait. The current macbook pro is probably the best notebook that Apple currently offer.

I purchased the Mac Pro for the USB ports for my external hard drives and the HDMI port so I could hook up to a TV.

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015)
    2.5 GHz Intel Core i7
    AMD Radeon R9 & M370X 2048 MB graphics cards
    OS X El Capitan

And I love it!!! since I use the TV I cannot speak for the screen but the graphics on the TV are great but
I did pay a pretty penny for it…$3,799.00

had to purchase through Apple as I could not find the top end Pro anywhere else.

The absolute opposite of a bargain.

      • actually I got a very good discount but was told not to tell by a friend, LOL. I paid only $3,000.00 for it. It pays to know someone on the inside!

        • Still not a bargain. It's heavily under-spec and outdated for that money.

Not saying it's a bad machine, but there's no way that hardware is worth any more than 2K.

        • @klaw81: Hate to bust your negative bubble but it is the top of the line that is available through Apple… It don't get no better then that.. Unless you just down on Apple? No doubt Apple is high priced compared to other computer systems but if you want an Apple that is what you will pay for the top model available as of today.

          @My Possum:

I'm not down on Apple generally, but all their products are pretty obviously overpriced. And even if you accept that as a fact of life, the current top-end MacBook Pro is easily the worst value product they sell.

Paying so much extra just to get such a truly garbage GPU that's not even capable of being used to the fullest of its meagre ability due to throttling is just adding insult to expensive injury.

Yes, if you must have an Apple laptop you don't have any choices, but that doesn't make it any less of a rip-off.

You purchased $3000 Mac Pro for its USB ports and HDMI port to connect to a TV, are you trolling?

Pretty much any laptops have usb ports and hdmi port

      • I was referring to a Mac Air compared to a Pro NOT a Mac Pro compared to all the Windows based laptop systems. Smart decision? dumb decision?

I had heard nothing but good things from people who owned Macbooks and was fed up with Windows operating systems with all the errors I was getting and problems that I had to resolve. I was also told Macs were better for avoiding hackers/virus's and Maleware.

The verdict is still out on if I prefer the Mac over the Windows systems but it has been a huge learning curve and so far not so easy to do the things I was used to doing with Windows.

And I am afraid of Linux so I did not even go there.

  • I think the new MacBook is really ugly, also, it really puts the board in keyboard because it's like typing on a board rather than a keyboard so I would recommend spend some time with one before you commit to buying if you do go for the not air

    • they all look the same to me??? slim and silver. How can a laptop be ugly? and all laptop keyboards feel the same - HARD. Even my external keyborad feels hard, not soft like those wannabe keyboards for some tablets.

      • I don't know how but Apple managed it. It's one ugly laptop. And the keyboard is awful. Jbhifi has heaps of laptops on display, with a wide range of keyboards to try if you don't know what I mean

The correct term you are looking for is called 'key travel'. TBH, laptop keyboards have been progressively getting worse and when you start to compare a keyboard of a Lenovo T series laptop from 2011 versus modern ultrabooks today such as the Macbook Air / Pros, you'll find that the keys of the older classic T series laptops have

      1. Have better key travel (Travel, in case you didn't know, is how 'deep' the keypress is. A shallow or short key travel leads to more typing errors, and also provides less tactile feedback than a key with longer travel time. Most ultrabooks have 1.2mm of travel, the old MB Air has just 1mm, but the new MB is absolutely tiny at 0.5mm, less than half than what most people are used to. It's almost like tapping on a touchscreen.

      2. Key pitch — 19mm is the norm. The pitch refers to the horizontal spacing between the centers of each key. Any less than 19mm will make the typing experienced cramped and uncomfortable.

      3. key shape and surface material — desktop keyboard keys are concaved shape, and so provide a nice resting place for your fingers to land on — simply by touch you know you're hitting the center of each key. A lot of laptop keyboards aren't made this way anymore, unless you specifically chose a clunkier, thicker business laptop.

      4. Also notice on the classic thinkpad, the ESC key is enlarged, and the HOME, END, PGUP and PGDN keys are clustered together just like the layout on a normal IBM desktop keyboard. Typing on this kind of keyboard will give you that familliar 'desktop' feel and comfort.

So in the interests of making laptops thin, we're sacrificing ergonomics just to shave a few mm off the chassis and making it as light as possible. Apple has set that kind of trend with their first-gen MB Air and everybody is following it, even Lenovo.
