Tasmania (Launceston OR Hobart) - Cheap Car Rental

Hello,

I'm planning a trip to Tasmania - landing either at Launceston or Hobart airport, and am looking at car hire prior to booking flights.

Currently they are showing at approx $50+ per day.

Does anyone know a more reasonably priced company (in the Gold Coast we were paying approx. $30 per day)

Thanks

  • http://www.locostautorent.com/ I was backpacking and there were ads in the backpacker guides for cheap car rental, I just checked yellow pages for that one.

  • Also, it is often cheaper to get a taxi from Launceston airport to Launceston city to collect a car, there is often hidden airport tax .

Just got back from Tasmania. I booked a Nissan Micra with Budget for 17.5 days at $320 but when I arrived at Hobart airport they gave me an X-Trail for the same price. That's $18.30 per day.

    Went through https://www.vroomvroomvroom.com.au/

  • A family friend rened with this company because it was a lot cheaper…

  • You can compare all the car rental companies on this site (see below) its basically a search engine and compares all car rental company prices

It all depends on what season you are going. Last month I booked a car one way from Hobart to Launceston for $26 for a day but you can't always get that sort of deal. Currently cars seem to be very cheap in Tassie(being winter) and can get a car for about $17/18 a day.

I'd suggest arriving and leaving from same airport to save you one way fees on rentals as they usually aren't as cheap as that.

Those sites will generally give a better price than booking directly with one of the major companies.

Are ones that aren't always picked up by other booking sites.

I imagine you are planning to go outside the cities so I'd definitely recommend not going the economy cars as the roads aren't great. Usually it's only $3-5 extra a day to get a mid size car.

Also, depending on where you are going there's some great relocation deals for Tassie at the moment. Depending on date's you can go Hobart to Melbourne or vice versa for $1 a day in a camper van.

    • Bargaincarrentals were going to charge a hefty relocation fee- $55 from memory- for picking up at Hobart airport and dropping off at Launceston. Budget didn't charge one. Larger outfit, more cars, I guess.

  • Thanks everyone.

Sorry I should have specified. This id for February next year.

Might be more due to being summer.

  • I used www.arguscarhire.com last time and paid $30 for East Coast Car Rentals in Hobart per day. In Launceston I used Bargain Car Hire for around $30 per day.
