Income Tax Fine

Hi,

I failed to submit a income tax return for the year 2014/2015. Logged into Mygov the other day to see I have $720 fine.

I have now lodged the return for 2014/2015 and also 2015/2016.

I know it was stupid to leave it this long but, is there anyway I can get out of this fine?

Cheers

Check out the remission of penalties page on the ATO website:

    https://www.ato.gov.au/General/Dispute-or-object-to-an-ATO-d…

This is for an individual tax return yeah? If you see a tax agent for your tax matters, talk to them and they can send a request for you via email for you through the tax agent portal.

AFAIK you've to pay the fine/any outstanding first with the ATO before you can request a remission

Call the call center and ask them to remove the penalty if it was a once off and you're normally pretty compliant. They should remove it for you no drama

  • Did you owe them money in any of your return? If you didn't, they will most probably remove the fine. If you did, they will be less likely.

You will have to ring them to find out either way.

Just, just… Please see an accountant.

you certainly do not need an accountant for this.

You're right, of course… Why ask a professional?

lol mate, an accountant's expertise is not to do with lodging a request for a penalty remission.

          anywho la da di

  • Remission of penalties are easy in my experience. Just call and ask, i'll be surprised if they ask for a reason…
