Network Storage with video decoding

Hi all,

I'm looking at Network storage that is capable of decoding some of my video files in .m2ts format.

I'm thinking something with dual drive running raid 1 configuration…

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

  • Any old box running something like the awesome www.nas4free.org from a 32GB USB drive with a few NAS grade drives and a decent network card. A box like the HP ML10v2 is ideal, and can be had very cheap in the Deals section here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/260249 You may need to see if they can still do it though

  • That looks like an awesome idea…
I was a bit concern with the power consumption running a server vs a lower powered NAS.

Anyhow, I've the done the maths.

At 411kWh per year at 47Wh idle, it will cost aound $100 every year. With lower power NAS, it'll cost about 50% lesser…

With setup, how much work is it for someone with some basic IT knowledge on networking, setting PC etc… ?

    Thanks.

    • Alternatively you can look at Simple NAS as an ULV solution with a BananaPi/OrangePi etc. Looking @ approx. $10-20 per year in power depending on how many drives and the SoC will come in under $50.

  • I've been testing out plex server on my home pc, streaming via plex client on my android mobile and chrome casting onto the big screen. It looks like plex server does not recognise and hence will not convert between different video formats.

Ideally, I'll like the NAS to decode different video format and share the files using Plex.

Anyone has success running Nas4free with above combo or commercially available solution that is not ridiculously expensive?

    Thanks.
