Atmos In-Ceiling Speakers Yamaha vs Klipsch vs Polk Audio

Hey guys,

Need urgent help picking in ceiling speakers for my theater room.

I already have a 5.1 floor standing surround setup and just upgraded to Atmos capable receiver so need in ceiling speakers

I'm tossing between:

Yamaha NS-IC800
$250 Ebay

Klipsch White R-1800-C
$190 Ebay

Polk Audio RC80i
$250 from Amazon U.S

They're all 8"

One of the cons I know of the Klipsch is that it does not have a swivel tweeter which I think is important to aim towards the seating area while watching something

I would also like to know what the Frequency Response is and what is better, wider range like 50 Hz – 28 kHz? or narrower like 35 Hz – 20kHz

Appreciate the help

Broader is better. 'Ideal' human hearing is generally considered to be around 20Hz - 20kHz. You're not going to get that range though. Furthermore, there are many different ways of measuring frequency response, and I expect (uninformed guess) that Atmos will only use a small part of this range, so I wouldn't place too much of an emphasis on this aspect.

As for the speakers you've suggested - I'm not sure as I'm not very familiar with ceiling speakers. You may also want to consider external Atmos speakers which fire towards the ceiling (https://www.google.com.au/search?q=atmos+speaker).

  • +2

50Hz is fine for satellite speakers, because ideally you should be setting filters to above 80Hz anyway as anything below is towards subwoofer territory.

  • You mean there's really a brand name or technical term called ATMOS out there. I always thought it was a name only used in 2 Doctor Who episodes. ATMOS stood for Atmospheric Omission System in these episodes.

  • Keep in mind when it comes to ceiling speakers, they aren't always sold in pairs… caught me out a few times when deciding which ones to buy.

    • Which ones did you decide on?

      • Didn't go ahead as I would need to replace my amp which is only 7.1

        • But on a honest note… my current surround speakers with 5.1/7.1 content only play sound for seconds during movies…

I wouldn't bother spending big dollars

  • Hmm, I don't think I'd be looking at anything too low down in frequency for secondary Atmos speakers. You are going to be using a sub or two anyway.

Personally I'd be looking at Cambridge Audio C46 speakers. These are small enough they can use downlight type holes (useful if you move) and the Minx are good as satellites.

    • I like that they're enclosed on the rear. I don't like the idea of dust and other junk from the ceiling space covering the exposed types of speakers.
