I have a Samsung S4, it's been great, but its getting laggy and I'd just like a change.
I'd like something with a good camera,
5inch+ screen, nothing 6" though.
Basically, something that's an upgrade from the S4, that I can get for under $1000 if possible and not a grey import.
Any suggestions and recommendations on what I should look at, there are so many out at the moment I don't know where to start.

There are like eventy billion phones under a grand $1k. There's only about 4 different phones that are above that 1k mark: iPhone6 Plus, S7 Edge, HTC 10 and Galaxy Note 7.
The 2016 Google Nexus which is coming in 2 months.
It has the best warranty, update and after sale support.

I had a S4 on Virgin $40 unlimited plan just updated to S5 on the same plan. Haven't found a reason to fork out premium for a new release phone yet.
If you're thinking of throwing out the Samsung S4 because of the lag then consider installing a few custom ROMs. You might be able to squeeze a little extra performance, maybe even overclock. If it works then spend the $1000 on a large tablet or smart watch.
i agree too :) most phones over the past 4 yrs arnt that much of an improvement(disregard power users/gamers/selpfie takers ) these days if your old one still works. Custom firmware helps ALOT if you know how to mod it.
if you dont wanna mod, the galaxy s5 is still good value in my mind.
