Or we could not support Gloria Jeans…

I've got nothing against their coffee, but google Mercy Ministries and find out what your money is funding, before you buy anything from GJs. I wasn't comfortable with it so I stopped spending my money there.

      • Interesting.. Thank you for the heads up, but it made me curious and I have discovered that you are, as of mid-2009, incorrect in your information;

In mid 2009 Gloria Jeans severed their sponsorship of Mercy Ministries and Hillsong publicly severed all links to Mercy Ministries in October, 2009. In mid-2009 Gloria Jean's Coffees International formed a charity, the GJCI "With Heart" Foundation, to support various international charities, including Compassion and Opportunity International.

Certainly sounds like the original charity was BS.

Going to + as I do like my GJ coffees.

That is true, but currently your money goes to Hillsong, whose interests and beliefs correlate directly to the interests of Mercy Ministries.

If you agree with the policies of the Hillsong church, there's no issue. But if you are not aware that your money is going there, and you would prefer not to support such an organisation, it's time to start shopping somewhere else.

The franchisee may not support the church, but on overwhelming chunk of his or her profits goes to Hillsong as franchise licence fees.

          • @Wampus: Fair enough. The problem I have however is that the only other options for coffee that I frequent are McD's, Wendy's, etc, or a coffee shop. It's a balance of cost vs quality for me, and GJ's are winning for now. Maybe we need more Starbucks, who do they give their money too?? :P

            • @ryang: I completely agree! It's easy to give up something due to your scruples if you didn't like it in the first place, but I used to buy GJs coffee quite a bit.

My suggestion - if you can afford a cheap coffee machine for home, get one, I haven't looked back! Or keep trying local coffee shops til you find one who can make a decent coffee.

        • i dont know anything about GJ or their conduct however I do know wikipedia doesnt count as a reference in such a debate.

          • @super8: Wikipedia's information is backed up by news reports and other references/sources. If you can think of a better way to get a point across, without pulling bullshit out of thin air, then please provide.

  • I went to check out the Southland GJs. I didn't think you could get decent coffee from a mass-market franchise, but this store had excellent coffee and great service.
Highly recommended if you live near there.

It isnt about the place you buy it from, the person who makes the coffee is much more important.

100% correct. It's the main reason why the coffee varies so much from shop to shop. If you find a barista you like - keep going back there, and insist on them making your coffee. ;)

  • Voucher does look pretty fake. No barcode no offer code either. Simply a juxtaposition of text and logos. Can someone report back? I might try it here on Lygon Street in the Borders. See if it works.

  • Voucher worked at Melbourne Central in the food court.

Melbourne has so many cafes - why would you need to go to a GJ?

    • are you farmilar with the concept of bargains?

  • I know this has nothing to do with the bargain, but Gloria Jeans are a religious-funded organisation that run gay-conversion courses, and as such, i think they're wrong!
