Is Woolworths (Mobile) getting desperate?

I had an experience yesterday I was not expecting from a large retailer like Woolworths. It was more what you would expect from those fly-by-night popup stores in shopping centres. This is not a deal as the Woolworths Mobile offers referred to here have been covered in detail in the deals section.

Anyway I was walking through the Woolworths Melbourne QV centre, when I was approached by a nice lady who was VERY VERY VERY keen to get me to sign up to a Galaxy S7/S7E deal on the spot!!! They have posters up and about 3-4 such spruikers around the stand and posters.

I had been considering gettng an S7 but have not made the jump yet (maybe subconscously waitng for the release of the iPhone 7, but I digress).

Anyway I was not ready to buy then, and said I had no ID with me in an attempt to get away, but she said NO PROBLEM SIGN UP TODAY TAKE THE PHONE WITH YOU BRING ID IN TOMORROW !?!?!?

I didn't know what's going on. Woolworths must be getting very desperate with their profit loss and all.

(deleted last paragraph as I do not want her to get into trouble in case she is just new and didn't know)

It's probably a third party that Woolworth pays.

You know, so they can pretend that they aren't responsible for someone harrassing you if it ever becomes an issue.

BTW, when did this become socially acceptable for strangers to start harassing people to sell them services and goods like this? Because for some reason it's still not socially acceptable to tell them to f off which is ridiculous …

Just like the freaking pests outside supermarkets flogging that waterless car wash crap! They dont take "piss off" for a response.
The mob flogging these WW mobile deals sound the same and does display desperation.

      • And those bastards trying sign you up for some ridiculous charity subscription plan.

        • At least we can depend on those nice support folks from Microsoft calling up to keep us safe from viruses. They've called me 182 times so far.

    • I just say hello and keep walking, don't even break my stride.

so, you weren't living up to your user name?

Yep. withoutphotoid. Didn't worry her though. Just give us your name (any name) sign here and walk out with a $1200 phone. Come back with id tomorrow. I'm still laughing….

Just a clarifcation: they were INSIDE the store just before you go thru the checkouts so you couldnt miss them have to walk around them to get to the checkouts. As I said, very desperate.

      • Maybe they were Samsung people?

  • Well fair to say woolies are being aggressive with their mobile offerings (if the $1 sims are anything to go by)

Happy to talk to people about their product, but if they try to pressure me I walk. Same thing with cold calls; we screen for callers and only pick up if it is someone we know. If I do accidently end up with a cold caller I say "sorry, not interested" and immediately put down the receiver. You don't have to be abusive but you can be abrupt.

OP could conceivably have left with a phone AND a phone number! ;)

        • But you are assuming the OP is straight :)

        • No need. She know's how to reach him because of the Woolworths SIM card she sold with the phone.

          Maybe the hotness is invalidwithoutphoto:

… I was approached by a nice lady who was VERY VERY VERY keen to get me …

        • @RockyRaccoon: You're assuming she cares…

        • @Mumbles:

Goes without saying if one was to succumb to that temptation the first thing one would do is throw away the given sim card. But the boys in blue could probably track one down by the phone's IMEI number anyway?
