Microsoft Surface Pro 4

First time poster, long time lurker.

I'm interested in purchasing the SP4 for uni next year (current Year 12 student). I've had the base model 32GB Surface 2 for 2 years now and it's time for me to get rid of it because I've been having some problems with it lately, as well as the fact that it's 32GB…

I'm currently looking for a good deal with the SP4's, I'm also looking to purchase the type cover for it as well.

I've checked the AU Microsoft Online Ed. Store but there seems to be no discount applied to the product (10% discount normally applies).

Are there any retailers out there that provide good deals by negotiation or price match for the SP4? Looking to buy the i5 4GB RAM & 128GB SSD model.

Thanks,

Hey kid. I suggest you get a laptop with good battery life instead of blowing money on a Surface.

My personal preferences are HP Elitebook 840 G3/1040 G3, Dell Latitude or Dell XPS 13.

I got mine from JB Hifi in December after they price matched Microsoft's student price without needing to show proof.

    • Hi there,

That's what I would most likely be doing as well.

May I ask how much it ended up costing and if you also purchased the type cover, with the discount as well? Also, was it a reasonable deal for the long term? Especially if I want to get 2-3 years out of it (entire duration of a 3 year degree)?

      Thanks

I deserved a treat after a promotion at work and I was sick of IOS restrictions so I was originally thinking of going from iPad 3 to SP3 but eventually talked myself into paying a bit extra and getting SP4 simply because it was 'latest technology'. I went in wanting the entry level 128GB Intel Core m3 but they had no stock so they offered the 128GB Intel Core i5 for $1300. I figured I already overspent so did not get the typecover. I got a $20 Microsoft wireless kb & mouse instead for light gaming (Minecraft, Sniper Elite 3). I will get the type cover once I earn some more brownie points with the wife - might have to wait for another promotion 8-}.

Website does say 10% off selected Surface - does that not include SP4?

    • The 10% discount doesn't apply automatically for student pricing in checkout for the SP4. Maybe you are right- the SP4 is exempt.

  • Student pricing dies exist. I think they have temporarily disabled it in the Microsoft website because the "free Xbox" promo is on. But I've read that it does still apply, just ring them up and they week honor it.

But also consider Reboot IT's refurbished Surface Pro 3 - very similar specs, probably about 20% slower, but about 1/3 the price.

  • My original Surface Pro 1 is still going strong and I use it most days. A type cover is essential to use as a laptop.

I also use a SP3 for work and the performance is great for everyday tasks. So I though you would be fine getting one of these for cheaper too.

If your budget allows I would consider getting the 8GB model with 256 storage to give you a bit of extra leeway for growth with multitasking and extra files you are going to be saving on there.
