eBay: Spend $200 (by 30 June) and Get a $50 Voucher (to Spend by 31 August)

Hi all,

What do you think about the case below?

30 June 2016: USD value to the transaction US $149.12
Payment method: Paypal
At eBay Australia checkout page, we confirmed the AUD value shown by eBay is greater than AU $200, excluded shipping, before proceeding to Paypal for payment
Paypal transaction value = amount taken from bank account (excluded bank fees): AU $202.38

7 July 2016: No voucher received, contacted customer service and sent screenshot of my bank statement to prove I spent $202.38

8 July 2016: eBay Customer Service mentioned transaction value $198.99 did not meets $200 requirement. However, because I actually paid $202.38 as shown in my statement they WILL honor the claim and will credit $50 back to my Paypal account after another purchase of $50 or more.

15 August 2016: Made a purchase of more than $50, email eBay with item detail so they could refund me $50 as promised

16 August 2016: eBay Customer Service said transaction value ($193.79) did not meets $200 requirement and eBay will NOT accept the claim

18 August 2016: Escalated to supervisor level who reaffirmed transaction value did not meets $200 requirement and eBay will NOT accept the claim. Blamed customer for not reading T&C.

27 August 2016: check myeBay, the transaction value is now $194.26. Obviously it is highly depends on AUD/USD exchange rate (eBay's relative/internal rate) and eBay used this constantly changing value to refuse issuing the voucher to customer.

27 August 2016: I am escalating this to management level and preparing to ring ACCC.

I am preparing to do everything to bring justice back. Listening to your advice.

Cheers

Technically if you were over the minimum spend at the time of purchase then it should be honoured end of story
    Pursue it

Ive won about 5 or 6 times against ebay and Paypal and won't accept any of their BS shady operations

  • What steps did you take to win, shawncro 222?

I managed to get the refund after several attempts to request the credit. They did say I was eligible for the credit at first when I asked about it the first two times, and I was promised the refund after the purchase. However, I was told that the purchases don't fulfill the requirements when I requested a refund and hence I was declined. I mentioned that I was promised the credit twice to a rep and the rep finally obliged to send the credit. The credit ended up in my eBay account instead of the PayPal account I was told though, no big deal, I can always request refund on my eBay balance. I think it's probably best to focus on being promised a claim during previous interaction with a rep. Was your interaction with CS on 8/7 online?

    • The very fist interaction was via livechat, all other correspondences were via emails.

How could a big corporation act like this and abuse customer like this? Integrity what? Had a few of them not promised me about the credit, I would have not made the second purchase.

I will not allow them to walk away that easy. They must treat customer with respect.

Emails usually don't go in your favor. When you talk to another ebay rep next time be sure to raise the point that you have been promised a credit and you have it on records. You should have received the transcript of the live chat

  • You're in good company…they got me with almost the same thing. With mine, one seller from the cart defaulted on a single item a couple of weeks later, after a lengthy Paypal dispute for refund dropping my total to $199.98…yeah, you read that right, they screwed me over two cents.

My argument was that I bought in good faith using the deal, with a total well over the threshold, and that I couldn't control the actions of a rogue seller…the response was "sorry sir, the system is automated, it is out of our control". What a BS cop out.

I remain filthy with them over this…two friggin cents!!! To add insult to injury, I'm still engaged in another two month battle over the CLICKMORE20 deal not being applied to another purchase…many promises later, no actual $$$ back yet! :/

I hope you get a win OP, but I wouldn't hold out much hope I'm afraid.

    • I was doing mine late at night and didn't read the bit about $200 excluding postage, I was up to $194. Bought another item within the promo period and was promised a credit, and after weeks of following up they reneged on this.

Still waiting for a response to my latest email a week ago, going to follow up again shortly. Unbelievable this sort of promotion is supposed to encourage people to shop on eBay, if this is the sort of help I get when something goes wrong I'll actively avoid using them and PayPal going forward.

edit: just spoke to them over live chat expressing how disappointed I was that I haven't heard back after a week. They are promising to follow up with last rep. Not holding my breath for a favourable outcome but out of principle I'm going to keep chasing them on this

Having some similar dramas.. but on a different deal. Short story is that they promised me $75 credit after purchasing another item.

I bought.. now enjoy the month and a half long runaround with no end. Live chats each time.

Their live chat reps don't seem to have approval to fix anything.

        • ok just updating that they paid me finally.

There is a scam going on , notice the value changes each time ? Thats cause " *Pricing based on current conversion rates ", which means they base the pricing on the conversion rate that day, and as the aud got stronger, the conversion rate changed and got lower.

    • Yep. That was my point. It was a scam or misleading customer at least. ACCC would be interested I guess.

What is misleading or deceptive conduct?
'Conduct' includes actions and statements, such as:

        advertisements
        promotions
        quotations
        statements
        any representation.

If a business creates an overall misleading impression about the price, value or quality of consumer products or services, they are likely to be breaking the law.

Sounds like a great reason to go to the appropriate regulator (Consumer Affairs?) and stop wasting your time with the jackasses.

A tactic I notice many large, established businesses use these days is just keep stringing the customer along until they go away. A variation of this is after realising you aren't going away fast enough they try and fob you off with an offer that is, naturally, far below the amount that they're attempting to scam you for in the first place. And then they keep increasing the amounts until some day months later you eventually are made whole (ohai Telstra) after wasting many hours etc.

Most people must give up because it seems it's cheaper to pay workers to do this crap and take the occasional slap on the wrist than to not try this crap again and again.

Don't play the game: do the minimum necessary in order to establish a complaint and take the problem to the regulator eg Consumer Affairs.

Why waste your time with this crap of trying to scam people legally?

    • Any one has experience bring similar concerns to ACCC or any other authority please share your experience. Cheers.

      • ACCC don't do anything. Fair trading do limited amount and then if they don't succeed they refer you to the tribunal

  • Update:

Got another message from cold voice someone, different day same BS:

    Hi xxx,
I truly apologise for the inconvenience that this has caused you.
The decision to decline the credit was made by our management and it is based on the terms and conditions of the voucher. I have provided you a link for the terms and conditions
Here are the full T&C's of the voucher: http://pages2.ebay.com.au/Buyer_coupons/50more
    Thank you for choosing eBay.

  • Another update: used LiveChat and the rep straight away tried to process a credit without hassle or BSting.
A few moment after he/she let me know it should appear in my Paypal account in 2-3 days.

Final note: Redwood rock! Do not use email primarily to resolve anything with eBay. The LiveChat team is really there to help, not hassle you like the other team.

    • Good news! I got my refund through ebay balance which mean extra hassle to bring the money back to my wallet. Great that your livechat rep managed to send the refund to your paypal account!
