Dual SIM phones - how does it work?

Just curious as to how this works and just in case I end up with a dual sim phone. How does a dual sim operate? Do you get sim 1 and sim 2 calls/messages at the same time or do you switch between sims?

In most cases you are able to use 4g on one sim, and 3g on the other. The Moto G3 I had few months back had a dual sim option which is useful for taking overseas and using different data plans. Here is some info on dual sim phones and this too :)

You sure? I've only had 4G on one and 2G on the other :(

      • I thought most dual sim phones were 4G and 2G.

Be careful though as 2G will soon be removed in Australia and those sim ports will not work.

These days they are usually dual active so both can receive but with band restrictions as stuhtb said. As for outgoing you often have a choice of one, or ask each time. A common ploy is to put a data only SIM in one slot.

This article explains how they work. It also explains the two differences between a Dual SIM Dual Active phone versus a Dual sim dual standby phone.

With most dual sim devices of the current generation, the second sim is usually 2G. When telcos such as Optus and Telstra shut down the 2G services by early next year, your second SIM slot will essentially be a dummy and if you throw in a SIM in that slot, you'll get no signals on SIM2!

Vodafone will continue using 2G (probably), but let's be honest, 2G is a thing of the past now and they will eventually shut it down and refarm the spectrum for something much more useful.

There will be devices that support 4G/3G on SIM 1 and 3G on SIM2, the newest one being the Moto G4.

    • So both sim slots are capable of 3G, just not the same time? Why would you want to use them both at the same time?

I have two sims in my phone. When I want to make a call, send a message or access the internet, the phone asks me which sim I want to use. Will that sim be operating in 3G regardless of which slot it is in?
