Cheapest place to purchase Sodastream Gas Cylinders

Hi Ozbargainer's,

I was lucky (unlucky) to be given a SodaStream Play for Christmas a couple of years ago and after using the Free Gas Cylinder, am now looking to swap / purchase a new cylinder. Given that the starting cylinder was not the 60L, do any stores accept these and allow you to pay the difference? Which stores are the cheapest for both purchasing new as well as swapping old for new? I have looked at Big W and K-Mart (and even contemplated getting some from Dick Smith before they closed, but missed that boat).

Thank you for any future responses.

  • We took empty cylinders to TARGET. Do not know the exchange / buy price of cylinders as we no longer had a Soda Stream unit.

  • Mine is from sodaking, the refill is $19.

  • Try Woolies/Coles supermarkets as well, they often tend to be a buck or two cheaper than the department stores for exchange.

  • Fill them yourself.

  • There is some weird arrange whereby you don't actually own the gas cylinder as you need to have a licence. Instead you just borrow them for a fee.

When I swapped at Big W they didn't seem to notice the diff between a starter cylinder and the full size.

    • There's no 'starter', there's just two sizes, 40 & 60L…they just charge more for the larger one, and no difference between swapping either size.

  • Got mine from Target, $19. Couldn't find it cheaper, seems to be the going rate unless on special. (tried coles, big w, jb hifi, good guys, kmart, myer, most were $19)

  • Get one of these

Then you can use a 6kg or 9kg home brew CO2 bottle. Usually about $40 to fill. Expensive to setup initially but you'll recoup your money is no time if you're a regular user.

I have this setup and its great.Usually about 2 months between fills.

    • Thanks for this tip!

  • Locally, wow, Coles, Kmart, target, all have put up spda stream prices, from 19, to 21.

No issue handing in a 40l, getting a 60 in rtn, they only stock the 60s.
You just pay the charge for the 60.

We use our soda stream every day, a lot. Between me and the gf, we have 4 cylinders, 2 each. We both have a machine and both got an extra spare cylinder, so when we run out we have time to get another one.
We both like sparkling water and the daughter likes the sparkling too.

    • Hey Albanyson, Where did you purchase your spares from?
