Recommend a GPU for an Older Desktop

I have the following desktop lying around (see below). With the sales popping up at the moment I was hoping for some help choosing a graphics card (of minimal cost) for it as it has none. It's getting on and maybe it isn't worth it, although it is just to place in the shed to hook up to a TV via HDMI to stream sports. Maybe a basic steam game or two when the nephew comes around and tires of my stories.

Cheers

Get something 2nd hand from Gumtree, OCAU or here on OzBargain. You should be able to get a GTX 670 or 680 for under $100 with a little effort, it would be a good match for that CPU.

The main limitation you would run into is the 410W PSU. Some graphic cards would need more power. Also what is the OS?

    • Win7 or 10, cheers

If you want a basic video card with a HDMI port - then a ATI 5450 is a good option. I had some old Dell 755 - about the same vintage as yours. The advantage of the 5450 is it is generally low profile, the Asus models used to come with the relevant low profile case brackets too. The Asus ones were also fanless - one less fan sucking in dust in the shed.

I picked up a Radeon 6850 for $40 dollars via OCAU. Much better than a crappy old 5450 than I had lying around and it is strong enough to play some games. It only requires a single 6pin power adapter, so 400 watts was plenty.

For $80 dollars you can get a 7870, and for $120 maybe a GTX 660 and $160 would get you a GTX 960.

  • +1 ask around gumtree.
I grabbed 2 7770's free a couple of months back when my GPU speared in.
Lots of people have upgraded to 1070/1080s recently, might get lucky.
