Learner Insurance - in Their Name or Mine?

Hi all,

The daughter is sixteen and has recently applied for her learner licence. I've just bought a small car for the wife to take her out over the next twelve months with fortnightly lessons with a local driving instructor to keep her on top of things.

Right, I've not yet picked up the car and therefore it's not yet registered in anyone's name. So, my question is, should I just register the car it's belonging to the daughter and get insurance in her name, or do I register and insure the vehicle in the wife's name and have the daughter as a named driver on the policy??

Apologies if the question is slightly unlawful but we're from the UK and have no,idea of the routine.

Thanks.

I'd go mum (>18), however you need to read your insurance policy in regards to named/unnamed drivers.

I guarantee you your rates will shoot up as soon as a your daughter gets her Ps

Insure for the teacher (mum) driving. Check the insurance company policy, but for example with AAMI it ups the excess, but learners are covered.

  • Thanks guys, that's cleared a few things up. We are currently with Youi, so I will give them a bell and see what they can do for us. If they're no good, I will try AAMI or similar.

Check out Coles and Auspost as well. I used to be with Youi but changed this year as Coles were about 40% cheaper and gave more benefits (windscreen replacement, etc.) Get a quote from budget direct as well just so you can see how low insurers are willing to go.

I am in the same situation. I called NRMA and they say the learner is covered on my policy.. When she gets her P-plates then she must be specified as an additional driver.

    • thats odd , i thought with nrma Anyone who drives your car is covered ? just the excess of a p plater is a lot higher.

      • I still think they want to know who is the regular driver.

      • Additional excess applies to drivers under 25, or with less than 2 years’ driving experience.

I'd expect "regular" drives have to be named.
