How Much Does It Cost to Build a Basement Garage in Melbourne?

Hi all,

I'm just toying with the idea to knock down and rebuild. But in doing so, I'm thinking of a 200-250m2 basement garage. The land slopes up slightly, probably 1m max.

Does anyone have any experience or pointers regarding a project like this?

TIA.

  • I don't know much. But it helps if your neighbours have already built a basement garage. Otherwise you'd probably have to pay extra to keep up their houses (and foundations) while you're building so you need better reinforcements, pay more for excavation if you need to ramp downwards, and might need to consider the costs of waterproofing (especially if the garage is below stormwater drains).

  • ball park id say you would be adding $100k min to your build

Agree -family member just did a relatively small excavation for extra off street parking
      cost more than that :)

(land was beach suburb in Sydney)

Gonna need some quotes for sure.

  • Cut into the slope and erect a Retaining wall. Calculate it as a per sq meter costs and add excavation and soil quality for retaining wall. Costs will depend on builder. Just go and involve a builder or 2

  • Yeah, i've been told it costs $100-150k by an excavator guy who's a client of mine. Then i've been told $250-300k by Metricon.

I know the basics what is required - i.e. retaining wall, drainage etc. But surely there should be more info out there. Are there any building forums because I can't seem to find anything.

    • Why don't you ask them?
