Travel Insurance for trip paid by QFF points

I've recently booked an overseas holiday paid for with QFF points (taxes & charges paid by credit card).

I now need to think about Travel Insurance so throwing it out to the OzB community to find out which insurers covers incidents where I would normally be entitled to funds if I paid with dollars, but seeing as I paid with points, I would want/need the points back instead. I think such incidents would range from cancelled flights, trip cancellation due to unforeseeable events, etc.

And I would assume all the other medical stuff, loss of baggage/belongings would be covered no matter whether I paid by dollars or points?

Thx all.

You take a 5000 point hit for a cancellation if you need to change flights. Just find an issurer that will cover the difference if you have to cancel your award flights and rebook flight paid with money.

      THIS.

For travel insurance I've found covermore to be good.

  • Have you checked your credit card terms and conditions, a lot of credit cards cover travel insurance pretty well.

CBA auto give you basic cover, which you can upgrade for free for better cover when you 'activate' it online

    • I know my credit card does include travel insurance, but I only used the card for paying taxes & other charges. I should give them a ring, and they'll likely tell me to call the TI underwriter anyway.

    • I've done something similar using QFF points and activated my CBA travel insurance online. I've compared the activated insurance to other travel insurance policies available from the most common ozb discussed ones that you have to pay for but can't seem to see a big difference. Am I looking at them correctly? Seems like such a big advantage to get the CBA one for free compared to paying a few hundred dollars so I was a bit skeptical.

If anyone can help, that would be really helpful!

  • Qantas insurance is pretty good.
