Best valued custom home theatre system

Hi all, my 5x4m HT has been empty for too long due to me made redundant in the first half of the year. Now that I'm back on my feet, I want to start building the HT up. Initially, I was gonna spend big, but now I'm going to be patient and pick bargain for each item and custom build the system. I can get someone to wire up for me, so unless package deal is super good, Im not big fan of package deal. My budget will probably be around 8k now.

My main focus is picture quality,i.e. The projector. So this is where Im happy to spend most of my money on. The sound system is secondary. As long it's decent 5.1 system, I'm happy enough. Due to size of my room, I will probably only stick to 110" or less screen.

Love to hear some expert and enthusiast opinion on the HT build suggestion, and of course bargain buys along the way. Cheers!

  • Do you have acoustic batts in the walls? any windows in the HT room?
if not, the first thing i'd do is invest in some acoustic paint for your walls and quality window coverings.
this will reduce noise and light bouncing off walls/windows to give you a much better HT experience.

    • No acoustic batt, but I have thick curtain over the window.

  • I'd highly recommend the Sony VPL-HW40ES projector. I would have also recommended Elite Screens but they recently stopped shipping to Australia on Amazon. Check out www.selby.com.au they have some pretty good prices and their in-house screens have had favorable reviews.

    • Yea last time was recommended that Sony 40ES..what's the best price on the market now?

  • JVC Projectors have the best native contrast, black levels and dynamic range. This is the best picture quality you can get for your $.

    • Which particular would you recommend sub $5k?

      • The cheapest JVC is priced slightly above $5k. But if you can stretch the budget a little I don't think you will have any regrets if PQ is your priority. I also think you should put the biggest screen you can fit in the room. You will get used to 110" quickly. The JVCs have e-shift so you should not see any pixel structure at viewing distance.
