Converting AUD to USD Cash. What Is The Best Way?

Hello everyone,

After doing a little research myself, I have now turned to the OzBargain community for help!

My fiance and I are travelling to the US in exactly one month's time for our honeymoon.

We have the Bankwest Zero Platinum credit card which we will use for the majority of our trip, but we would like to have some cash on hand in case we need it.

What is the way of getting the best bang for my buck to convert AUD to USD?

I have looked into the Citibank Plus transaction account. Would I be able to get that up and running in time?

If it helps, we live in Perth.

Thanks!

  • You might be able to get the Citibank card up and running in a month - hopefully it would auto approve after applying online. If so, this is pretty much the best way of getting cash overseas. You pay more or less the exact market rate + an ATM fee. You'll save stacks of money doing it this way (plus it's easier!). The rates at airport exchange counters are a joke, as are the ones in shopping centres.

  • Apply for the Citibank Plus account. You may have time. If not you are no worse off as there is no annual fee etc. As Johnno07 says its the best for cash OS.**

If you have friends in the US, then when you go out for a meal, you can have them give you cash for their part and you put the rest on the card.

In the US cash isnt really needed that much even MacD's accepts cards.

**BTW most 7/11's in US have Citibank ATM"s so there is no fee if you use those ATM's so you save even more

  • I always just get large amounts out at the ATM. I wouldn't bother taking it with you

Yes, you have time. Do the online application now.
