New PC with Faults

Dear OZBargainers, How R U? I am currently troubled and puzzled by my recent purchase.
To start off my story, I have been aiming to buy a decent gaming PC for years. I finally pulled the trigger 2 weeks ago with the PCByte deal that came with a total 20% off which is this deal http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/162119545162?_trksid=p2057872.m27… and topped it off with a couple of upgrades (I5-6500, Mobo- B150M, PSU-650w, GPU MSI GTX 1070) I was happy with the price, and very thrilled with the purchase.

The PC came 3 days after which is spot on. I have not got an OS installed so I downloaded Windows 10 Media Creation tool from the Microsoft website and ran it on the computer, which worked perfectly.I then proceeded to install the driver for my GPU- and it was not detected. I did not think much of it that day and went to sleep.

2 days after I tried to start the PC, and it would run with fans, lights up, but the monitor won't turn on at all. I tried to restart, change monitor, nothing worked. Shortly after, the PC started restarting itself every minute or so.

I contacted PCByte and they said that I would need to return the PC so they would be able to decide whether it is an issue where they need to replace the parts. I have since sent it back for a week, and tried to contact the staffs on a daily basis, but they are not able to find out the issue. They said all the parts are working fine, but it just randomly restarts. I requested if it is possible to just send me another PC but they said it is not how things work.

Any advice, guys?

EDIT I made sure that the PSU was a decent one, it was a corsair 650w.

Update I contacted PCByte today and they still can't seem to figure out what the problem is. They agreed to build a replacement unit and send that to me next week. Thanks for your advice guys!

I wonder if they "accidently" gave you a 220W PSU instead of 600W like happened not very long ago with these shonksters?

Good luck - personally if I was you i would do the minimum necessary and then report their scamming asses to consumer affairs or whoever handles businesses scamming people. I say this because their tactic is to delay, delay, delay so don't waste your time, get it fixed by the gov entity that's there to protect you as a consumer.

I was concerned about the psu at the time as well but I checked with them before the PC arrived. I made sure that it is correct psu, and I received a corsair 650w which was fine.

It's hard coz it's a part you buy and it's from an online store. A lot of it depends on the build too. Try to install another os on it and see if that helps

check the cpu fan wiring is not blocking the cpu fan

So the PC is back with the seller?
Tell them you want a replacement or a refund immediately or you will go to fair trading, or your state's equivalent.
You have acted reasonably, so now they need to respond decisively.

  • Paypal?

      yep. would not be otherwise.

  • I had a similar problem not long ago with my own PC, for me it was a dying PSU. Maybe the one they gave you is faulty, if you know how and have a spare PSU somewhere you can test it and let PC.Byte know the issue, if not, you can see if they can test it however I think you will have to send the PC to them at your cost (possibly).

    -EDIT-
DERP, i really should read til the end lol… I'd say go through ebay and say the product does not work as intended or something.

    • I have already sent the PC back for a week, and I did went through the "product not working"reporting function on ebay, I just got forwarded from ebay to contact seller though

I had a similar problem, pc would start for 10 seconds then turn off, on again, then turn off.

It ended up being one of the ram sticks was slightly not pushed all the way in.

I suggest taking the ram out and putting back in firmly and see if that fixes the issue.

That sucks man, I'd be pretty sad. Personally I'd recommend learning how to build your own PC. The first time I did it when I was 19 I accidentally blew up the motherboard (left a spacer from the case touching the motherboard, oops). Since then I've done all my own upgrades and built PCs for my family members. It's a great feeling of achievement IMO and you enjoy the PC more knowing how it all fits together.

As for the current problem, I'd call them and say if they don't get it back to you by X (a few days?) then you'll request a Paypal refund. It doesn't seem like they're scammers as they're rated 4.3/5 on OzB and 99.6% on ebay. Not amazing, not terrible.

    • To be honest I'm pretty devastated, as I was looking forward to it so much. The only issue I had with building my own pc is putting them together- not that I don't know how but if somehow I short circuit the mobo then there would be 0 warranty for me. I would do it some time down the road though

      • Yeah I know the feels. Hopefully it all works out soon eh.

I am glad that you bought a prebuilt system rather than full parts that you build with. It would be a nightmare to isolate the problem but that's not your problem.

Demand for a fixed PC, new working PC or money back.

As others have said, trying to work out the issue and fix it is not your problem, it's theirs.
Set an time frame and tell them that by a certain date you would like the fixed PC returned, replaced or refunded.
Though I do feel your pain, new gaming rig is always exciting.

They said all the parts are working fine, but it just randomly restarts. I requested if it is possible to just send me another PC but they said it is not how things work.

So not all the parts are working fine. Just be patient, if you don't hear anything new/positive for a week, raise it again; send a polite but firm email stating you have waited long enough and as they couldn't fix the problem they are obliged to offer a replacement or a refund. Hopefully you paid with paypal, then you can paypal dispute at some point if required.

Sounds like a dodgy PSU or an overheating issue though - if someone fitted the CPU cooler incorrectly this could be the case.

    • I agree- I want to solve this without leaving a bad taste in my mouth. I'll take your advice- another week it is.

  • In stall a linux operating system to rule out the OS compatability with hardware.
There are drivers for nvidia cards as well that you can yurn on or off as desired to test that part out.

  • Recently bought some new PC parts (not from PC Byte) but found that the same issue was happening; PC would turn on, but not post/display anything through the GPU

Turns out it was because of the motherboard settings (Asus) which you need to manually change in BIOS to display from PCIE. I've built PC's for a while, this is the first time I've come across a manual setting stopping the PC from displaying via a plugged in GPU, which was really annoying

Since it's back with PC Byte, this might be resolved soon hopefully and could be another issue altogether, but for anyone finding this post with a fairly new build, check if you can get a display from the motherboard's display output first, then check the BIOS settings if you need to change the display output to come through PCIE.

  • I had same problem with a recent asus b150m gaming pro and i5 6400 build, I had to reset BIOS and run a clean install of win10.
