  • Cheaper. You are supposed to buy special eBay satchels and print off label

    • I think so

  • Supnigs will you tell me what is difference B/w ebay and Australia post for 500g parcel?

  • Printing labels off via ebay is a little cheaper at the moment compared to through a post office (I think Click & Send is still a little cheaper too).
I think you can use your own packaging.

However, I think prices for all of them may be going up in October.

  • 500gram satchel is $7.15 and 3kg satchel is $11.70. You have to have the eBay satchels to use these options which can be purchased from eBay for approx 10 to 20c each, with a minimum of 5.

The Parcel Post options within eBay are also cheaper than at the Post Office too, which use your own packaging and you measure and weigh the parcel yourself.

When you sell something on eBay with each sold item it will give you a "Print Postage Label" option. It's pretty straightforward from there. You print out the label that generates and the cost is added to your eBay invoice.

    • I am sure I have bought something from eBay in the 500g satchel for $5. Sellers must be making so much money.

Not possible, it may however be possible that the seller upped to price of the item to cover some of the post & packing costs.
        There are no $5 satchels.

Even if the seller only charged the basic $7.15 for 500gram satchel, they DO NOT receive that full $7.15.
ebay first takes a cut from the full cost (both from the item cost AND post & packing costs).
Then, if payment is made by either Paypal or Paymate - they take a cut from the full payment.

$7.15 does not take into account the cost of any packaging used inside the satchel (or whatever).

Just as ebay's favourite "freepost" option (less popular now).
There is no such thing as free post. It has to be paid for somewhere (as in inflated item cost).

    • You're supposed to use the satchels - but many do not.
I think it's Australia Post, on ebay, who sell those satchels. But you can get similar same size satchels cheaper from the likes of eb packaging.

It's a nice little earner for ebay, not only do they get a cut from the post & packing that you charge (on the listing) but then they get a cut from AP for allowing you to print a postage label.

I think many of you are confused as to why postage on ebay is cheaper than through "click and send" or the post office.

    The TL;DR
    1) ebay fees used to be charged only on the item's price, and not on postage.
    2) To avoid paying ebay fee, sellers used to sell items for 1 cent, then charge extremely high postage.
    3) So, ebay change the fee structure, and you now pay 10% fee on BOTH the item's price AND the postage cost.
    4) Therefore, the 10% discount on postage is not really a discount. It is basically ebay NOT charging you commissions on postage charges, which was the ORIGINAL ebay fee structure.

    For Example,
say a item cost $20 with $10 postage.
    What ebay used to be 5 years ago: Ebay fee = $20 x 10% = $2
    What ebay is like now: Ebay fee = ($20 + $10) x 10% = $3
What ebay is like now (if you used ebay postage): Ebay fee = ($20 + $10) x 10% - $1 postage discount = $2 (same as ebay fee 5 years ago)

Ebay charges a fee on top of the postage whether you use their printable prepaid label or not.

      • Read my above post carefully.
Yes, I know that Ebay charges a fee on top of the postage regardless, but that wasn't the point.
In short, the ebay postage discount is not a discount at all. All ebay is doing is "refunding" you the 10% fee they charge on postage.

This could be relevant for businesses. eBay postage will be charged as a fee from eBay which is not GST-inclusive whereas Australia Post postage has a GST component to it.

its cheaper to buy bulk 500g satchels than to use ebays print service.

      Yes and No.

In order of prices of 500g satchel (assuming you purchase 20 satchels):
      Ebay Satchel: 15 cents for satchel + $7.10 postage = $7.25
      Auspost Parcel Post Satchel: $7.84

In order of prices of 500g satchel (assuming you purchase 100 satchels):
      Ebay Satchel: 15 cents for satchel + $7.10 postage = $7.25
      Auspost Parcel Post Satchel: $7.22

      • na just buy bulk from post offices for around $6.2ea

        • How do you manage to get it for $6.20 each??? Hasn't the price gone up significantly?

        • @bsmksg:

We have some post office contacts and buy 500+ per order.

        • @pizzahut: I see. I do agree that it is possible that bulk buying may be cheaper, but I doubt the OP intends to purchase such a quantity.

Which is why I said "yes and no". If your purchasing quantity is low, it would be cheaper to just use ebay postage.

        • @bsmksg: Fair enough.

Additionally printing it out saves you from having to write out the address and scanning in the tracking bar-code into the ebay app.

        • Yeah I wait for the Ebay codes and now my 500g satchels are $6.45 each or with 10% off $7.05. Easy - no paper required.
