Hotel in Kuala Lumpur

Due to the Air Asia sale and not know exactly what I would be doing/going, took the chance and bought school holiday tix to KL and now have figured I'd do Vietnam, again, despite the heat.

I will be stuck in that armpit of a city for a good chunk of two separate days. This will involve an overnight. I find the place revolting. I can justify a club room, maybe, one night as long as they serve full on grog. The other night I can't as I get in too late. Is there a cheap hotel but safe near the shopping centres? Where I don't have to deal with those FILTHY taxi drivers and their rude questions? Where I can just walk out, walk up to 500m and be somewhere where I can see a movie or pretend to shop in their crappy stores.

Any suggestions on hotels?

Stuck in hcmc. Thats really unlucky

    • Never mentioned HCMC or SGN.

  • I've stayed at Reggae Mansion a few times, good cheap pick. It's a hostel with 4 'pod' dorms, but most of the partying is on the rooftop bar so you can skip it if you need sleep. It's near Chinatown, and short train ride to everywhere else.

    • Sounds cool except I'm bringing a very innocent 14 yo.

  • Check out the sunway pyramid business hotel, or resort (if you're feeling like the club floor). They can organise private airport transfers (at cost obviously, RM180 or so) and it's basically in the sunway pyramid shopping centre. They have some reasonable places to eat, you can get some roti boy, I think they have a cinema, and you can stay away from the CBD.

    • Couldn't find it under that name, but I found something called WResort at subway. Looked nice. I'll consider it. I've got seven months to dread this part if the trip. I did find one hotel that Agoda was running a $5 deal while everyone else was charging $69 for a lesser room. I booked it, but I don't think it's worth $5. Lol.

  • crappy stores?

  • I hate shopping in kl. they follow you around worse than Bali and won't shut up or piss off and always seem to be joking about you. Many if the stores at the shops had signs saying you couldn't try on the clothes or return them. WTF. The only thing I enjoyed in kl was having them wash my hair. You sit up while they do it and they make sure every strand is clean. I got this free with a karastase promo that included a cabin bag that broke the s cond time I used it. This was at one of their higher end shopping centres. Damn I hate this hole.

    • I would have thought it was 10 times worse in Vietnam..

    What's with the attitude ?

  • We always stay at Hotel Sentral.

    http://hotelsentral.com.my/

It is 200m from KL Sentral which is the main railway station. The airport bus, which you should pre-pay on the Air Asia website, coz itz cheapa, arrives in the basement of KL Sentral.

It is a very modern, clean, relatively inexpensive hotel. The rate includes breakfast which is served in the rooftop restaurant. My partner challenged me about whether it is on the rooftop. The elevation of the building is L shaped with 5 floors below the base of the L. The restaurant is at the base of the L with a rooftop eating area on the foot of the L. OK!

They will store luggage for you if you arrive before check-in time or if you have a late in the day departure.

It is a couple of hundred metres from Little India where you can get great Chinese food - just kidding, Indian food - and you can see some Indian culture - flower markets, statues, temples, clothing stores.

It is behind the monorail station (silent) that will take you to Bintang, the main shopping area from where you can walk to downtown, and to the station nearest to Petronas Towers, two of the tallest buildings in the world with a shopping centre at the base and great parkland surrounding it.

It is within easy walking distance (easy for us as we walk for at least one to two hours every day) to the National Museum and Mosque. Behind that you can climb the hill to the orchid gardens, the bird park, the war memorial and Parliament building.

From KL Sentral you can take the bus to Genting Highlands. It costs almost nothing (say $2) for a 1.5 hour bus ride into the mountains and then a cable car ride up to the casino and fun park, though the last I heard it was closed for refurb. If it is open it would be great for a 14 year old.

I would book the ticket the day before because the buses book out very quickly. I would book a very early bus because if you go later in the day the queue for the cable car can be up to one hour long. Before you catch the cable car book your return ticket, based on the length of the queue plus say 2 hours at the top or longer if the fun park is open. Don't leave booking the return ticket until you are ready to leave because you could have to wait several hours for a seat.

Note that food is twice as expensive as in KL.

From KL Sentral you could take a train to Klang, a satellite city, or Port Klang which is the container port. The ferry to Indonesia leaves from here. It's just somewhere to go in AC that will let you see the suburbs passing by. Walk out of the station, look left and right and catch the same train back.

When we were at KL Sentral for the last few times they have been building a new high rise office building between the station and the hotel

Station Sentral - New Building - Monorail Station - Hotel Sentral

The bus arrives in the basement so if the building is finished there should be a walkway from the next floor through the new building to the monorail station. Hotel Sentral is 50m along the track from the monorail station.

This assumes they haven't built a new monorail station in the new building, which is what I would have done if I was designing things.

If the building isn't finished (For crying out loud - they've been building it for years and it's 2 year since I was last there so it must be finished by now!) walk out of the basement, cross the main road at the traffic lights, walk to the next street, turn right and walk 50m to the hotel.

Don't be put off by the negative comments about KL. It is a great city to visit. I'm sure you will enjoy your stay.

  • A really budget hotel, clean and safe but more than 500 m from shopping centre is Tune Hotel in Downtown Kl. It's owned by the same Air Asia Boss, with similar business style. I have stayed there more than 30 nites over the past 6 years. You can catch a monorail to the shopping district for less than A$1. The monorail is about 6-10 minutes walk using the sky bridge. Hotel cost for a double bed or twin is about 100 ringgit or less than A$35 inclusive of towels and wifi. If you just want a BASIC room to sleep, Tune hotel is an option. You can catch a FREE bus(Go KL) near this hotel to KL Ssntral and from there take a bus to KLIA2. Bus fare is 11 ringgit or less than A$4 dollars per person if you do not want to take a taxi from hotel.

If you want a full service hotel, can try Park Royal in KL. It's within walking distance to the shopping district, restaurants, cinemas etc. I paid A$100 per nite when I stayed there 18 months ago. It's a 4-star hotel and it was good.

    • I just re-read the original post. It was you who said that they didn't like KL. Oh well. I tried to help.

Sorry about replying to your post. I thought I was replying to mine. I can't see any way to delete a post.

      • Maybe there's a better way I don't know, but the convoluted way is to edit your post, blank the text, then when you post, it will ask if you really want to delete it. Of course if there is no edit link, it's too late.

  • Depends if you want to go into kl city. If not, just get a room at tune hotel klia2/LCCT. It's within walking distance from the airasia terminal. Don't even have to pay for transport into kl city.

The airasia terminal has a small integrated shopping centre. It even has a small supermarket. The prices are reasonable.

You can easily spend a full day there.

  • Any of the adjoining hotels to the Mid Valley Mall (5 storey mall) and the hotels are literally joined to the mall, so no walking out and having to deal with the "uncomforts". Hotels include Boulevard, Residences and Cititel. The trickiest part will be transport to and from the KLIA2.

  • You seem hard to please!

While I will admit KL is not as clean as Singapore - no where is - I have never found KL as unsafe or as obnoxious as you paint it. Maybe you are confusing KL with Calcutta or someplace else?

I will agree 100% about the taxi drivers in KL, I loathe them with a passion. I go everywhere on the monorail, or train. But that said, Indian and Egyptian taxis are worse!

There are loads of hotels around Bukit Bintang to cater to all budgets. The area is safe, heaving with people most hours of the day, and lots of shopping. I love the computer mall, though the staff can be a bit annoying as they need to make sales. But that happens everywhere. I had to read the riot act to a guy in a PC World store in London last year, when he followed me all round the shop! In other shops in KL, I have never had a problem trying on clothes. It is essential, as a lot of their stuff is cut for smaller Asian men.

A slightly different mindset may give you a more enjoyable holiday.

    • I love KL, really don't get all the hate it gets.
The taxis are fine too, sure not to Singapore standards but whatever.

If you always compare everywhere you go to somewhere else, you'll always be miserable.

Aloft at KL Sentral gets my vote.
Le Meredin and Hilton are just as close but they seem old (style wise) and full of old people.

For a pool with a view then D'Majestic in Pudu which is near BB

  • I love KL as well… always spend a couple of days there, by myself (woman), never had any problem… always use the monorail and trains… and always stay at Accor Ibis styles…october now im trying the Holiday Inn Express…newly opened.

    • Thanks for the info re Holiday Inn Express, I shall try that next time. Last year I stayed at new Wolo, right on the corner of Bukit Bintang opposite Lot 10. Wonderful location, but too trendy for me, the beds are on the floor, and I have some mobility problems, so getting in and out of bed was really hard for me.

  • Try Concorde Hotel. Walking distance to KLCC. Below is the link
    http://kualalumpur.concordehotelsresorts.com/offer/rooms-plu…

  • Depends on how your travelling. If you're with your wife/partner for cheap luxury try the Royal Chulan, well positioned 5 star hotel which last time we were there only cost us AU$100/night. We loved it and will definitely be going back.

  • Hotel Wolo cheap and close to everything
