  • I know you don't care about the "smart" features, but I implore you to consider this: The Interface.

There's some TV's with bland interfaces that do what they need to do, and get out of the way.
    That's all fine and dandy.

Then there's some TV's with horrible cartoon interfaces.
And the worst seems to be my brother's $3,000 Samsung:
It takes ~30 seconds to turn on, ~1min to turn off, and ~10 seconds to flip from channel to channel.

A good way to know what you're getting before you buy is to play with them at JB Hifi etc etc.
And if its not available (eg/ Aldi TVs), then just go on YouTube and look for a unboxing/review of it.

Sony uses Stock Google's Android TV (the not-open sourced one).
Phillips uses Google Android (like a Moto phone).
Soniq uses a highly Skinned Android OS (just like chinese branded phones).
Samsung uses Tizen (a Linux-based mobile OS based on the infamous TouchWizz interface).
LG uses webOS (passed down from Palm Pre).
Panasonic uses Firefox OS (from those $50 phones in Africa, by Mozilla).
Hisense uses a website-based OS (built by Opera browser).

    • I'm looking for a tv too.

Nothing wrong with the one we have, which is a Toshiba, nearly 7 years old, but we've had trouble making the bluray player talk to the to properly. The sound often goes off… So we're looking for a replacement.

No bigger than 40 inches, as we have a small space, but it's impossible to find one with good specs. I read a review on the Samsung, and the reviews put me off the brand, for TVs. Same with Panasonic.

Anyone with any ideas or suggestions?

      Thanks.

      • Before you run off and get a new set, can you try and connect your BluRay player to the internet.
They actually need to upgrade their firmware from time to time (new BD standards etc etc).
        That might solve your problem.
It was the cause of the problem for mum.

The other solution is to buy a PS3/PS4/XB1.
These have BluRay players built-in, and most people have these connected to the internet anyway.
So these get firmware updates to their BluRay players without you even realising half the time.

Another cause of the problem could be your entertainment unit (ie Sound Box/Amp).
It's the cause of problem at my house at the moment, where my BluRay player (PS4) won't talk with my TV.
If I connect the PS4 to the TV, there's no problem.
But if I want to get the sound to come out of the surround sound, then it doesn't work.
I'm thinking of claiming it through warranty, or replacing the unit outright.

So getting a new TV might not solve the sound issue at all if the problem is from your BluRay player/amp.

But if you do want to get a new TV, I would ask what features would you look for?
The small TVs with high-end specs are not cheap, and only come from Name Brand tvs (Samsung, LG, Panasonic etc).
I'm not sure if such high-end specs are worth it in smaller units, they might be overkill/waste of money.
But you should also consider the interface as well, because that's actually one of the big differences between brands.

Just like with cars…. some cars might look great from the outside, but at the end of the day, you have to live with how it is inside the cabin.
And a cabin that's small, too cluttered, or cheap feeling might really kill the experience.
Same with TVs… most have the same minimalistic exterior design, decent looking displays, and tinny speakers…. but you just cannot change their interfaces.
