Tell Me about Your Smart Plugs

Hi guys!

I have been doing lots of research on low cost smart plugs, similar to WeMo.
Looking for some feedback on the various brands available for this.

I have done research on sonoff, wemo, ovibo, broadlink s20, d-link smart switch..

Hoping to hear some of your experiences, a lot of sites that talk about them are affilate sites or quite out of date.

Just need a solid smart plug that can be controlled via an iOS or Android app. Features like timed on/ off is also required.

I really like Sonoff but I am not an electrician so I am not going to start hacking up the power leads for my devices.

I just want to find a good model and stick to it as I plan on expanding them eventually

Ideally around 30 dollars a piece.

Cheers

  • For anything plugged direct into 240V mains, I'd be looking only at locally sourced options.
It's just not worth the insurance nightmare should one of these devices end up being poorly manufactured/insulated.

  • +1

What's wrong with using a Wemo switch?

I've got my heated towel rack scheduled from Monday to Friday for an hour in the morning. Works well.

    • mixed reviews and at 60 dollars a piece, it will make our solution of 10-15 power points quite expensive. But still an option if they are a solid piece of kit

      • IFTTT integration too.

        I haven't seen anything cheaper.

  • There are plenty of options in the US, but due to our plug / voltage & strict compliance laws, very few companies are going to make them for our market in the near future.

Even Samsung are making no sign of releasing their SmartThings platform here, so people that are importing it for the hub and sensors still need to marry it to another switch to control power.

The WeMo system certainly has some limitations, but the switches are pretty good and you can use them as stand alone devices, or run them with other hubs, controllers and apps. At least you can just get a switch or two without having to invest in a hub that locks you to a specific system.

I have seven WeMo switches in my house that are all controlled by an Amazon Echo, and I have very few issues.

    • Cheers for that mate, looks like WeMo might be the go!

      • I've got some plugs around the house & they work great.
With iOS, you can also use the widget Control+ to control the plugs.

But one major downer is that now that Homekit is out for iOS, Belkin has announced that their devices will not be compatible with Homekit.
