Stolen Bike Gear at Work

Need advice…bike is locked in secure cage in work carpark, with has cameras, security man etc…..someone breaks in and steals my $600 bike computer.

Work says all care, no responsibility….but no signs & never told this…..plus security negligence?
Do I bother pushing the point?

You probably don't need to be told explicitly that you shouldn't have left an expensive computer unattended on your bike at work, right…

Sometimes I leave my phone or laptop in the car park too accidently. I would so be passed if it got stolen.

Maybe OP left it hidden in the handlebar basket?

The real crime would have been if they stole his streamers or the footy cards from his spokes!

  • How do you call this "security negligence"? Maybe the guy who parked next you saw the expensive computer and decided to take it. how do you say some one broke into the locked secure cage? was there physical damage or just the computer missing? if there was physical damage to the bike cage then probably you could get them to make a complaint to cops and hand over the security camera recording. usually the camera's are only at entry and exit. this will not help if the computer was taken by someone who also had access to the parking. sorry about your loss but you could have been more careful.

  • Would work insurance cover this at all? I had something stolen from work and i was offered this option…..ended up getting a gift card from work to cover losses as it was cheaper this way given my item wasn't worth that much!

  • I am confused. The bike was locked inside a cage in the carpark.
Is this cage just for your bike or do others have access to it? (and are other bikes stored there).
Is it locked with a number padlock or key?
How did they break in to steal it?

I assume that they didn't take the bike because you locked that up? You would lock it up because there is a risk that somebody would take it. That tells you that you left the computer on it as a calculated risk.

That said, I feel for you :( Thieves are despicable.

Agree… a lot of details conspicuously missing, as if trying to justify OP's position.

        Doesn't… help that the OP is….. written like…. a…. bloody…… poem/bad song lyric….

        …..

        ..

    • Most bike lock ups in big buildings work as follows: you get a keycard or key through facilities/building management. They keep track of everyone who has access, but all the bikes are stored in one big cage together. You would usually supply your own bike lock or similar within the cage.

  • Seems like the bike is parked in a cage which is shared by work colleagues.

Something similar had happened at my previous workplace. One of the lady forgot her mobile in the washroom and when she remembered in like 15mins she came back and it was gone. She called the cops - the cops reviewed the footage and called about 10 of us for like 5mins interview each and in an hour they had figured who had the phone and got it back.

Our boss was quite unhappy though as it disturbed the workday for most of colleagues.

So the only bit you need to consider is the repurcussions for you at work and you know that best !

    • Heck, he is disrupting my work day too :(

  • or is this a hypothetical?

      Hypothetically, what if it was?

        is that a rhetorical question?

  • kind of related, about 2 weeks ago in the middle of Brisbane, 4pm fine day about 50 metres down and across the road from my bus stop, couriers bike chained to a bike post. Junkie scum casually walks past, turns back and proceeds to take light or computer (something) attached to handle bar. Takes about 20-30 seconds, passersby who notice just spectate and then he casually continues down the street. Doesn't matter how quick or secure you think you might be, it only takes a moment.

  • Talking to ourselves. Standard instance of somebody asking a question then reading the replies and cycling off into the sunset (without a computer) without as much as a thanks.

  • If theres security cameras, cant they / you check the cameras?
