David Jones Points vs Qantas Points

Hi all,

I'm planning to get the david jones credit card to take on the points offer.

Which point system did you go for and why?

I don't do much travel, so should I get the DJ points and redeem vouchers (e.g gift cards, petrol)?

I would go with DJ points even if you plan to use them for travel. The DJ points system nets you 1.5 starpoints (Starwood Preferred Guest points) per dollar spent at supermarkets and gas stations, and you can transfer your starpoints from there to many more airline FF programs around the world. See here for the list of partners: http://viewfromthewing.boardingarea.com/2015/08/12/starwood-…

For instance, if you transfer to Alaska Airlines Mileage plan, 110000 miles could get you to Vancouver on Qantas Business Class return, while 112000 Qantas Points can only get you on Qantas Business Class for one way. So if you use DJ points system, you would only have to spend $73333 at supermarkets or gas stations while using the Qantas Points system you would have to spend $99555 to get on the same Business Class return reward. There are many transfer more options at SPG and you'll find more value out of it the more you dig deep.

In general, I would not recommend to redeem vouchers as they are some of the worst value for points options out there.

    • Very nice reply! What sort of items for you redeem with your points?

      • Flights primarily.

  • Is there any other Amex cards that compared to the DJ card or is this best in the market right now?

    • The Amex Platinum Edge is a solid deal. Best earn rate for supermarket and petrol spend (3 Membership Rewards points per dollar spent at major supermarkets and 2 Membership Rewards points per dollar spent at major petrol stations). You also get a free flight per year.

Plus, if you apply via a referral link you get a bonus 15,000 Membership Rewards Points, see:
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/american_express_referrals…

There are other cards with bonus referral points too, see in the above linked page.

      • Where do you draw the line if there is Amex surcharges?

Based on the 3 point system
Based on the 2 point system
Based on the 1 point system

I'm trying to find whether there is value in using amex if the surcharge is charged.

        • New laws have been passed limiting the amount of surcharge that can be applied for all credit card payments so this should not be a huge factor going forward.
Note that Woolies and Coles and most fuel stations do not have a surcharge for Amex payments (Aldi does not accept Amex).
For other places I don't mind paying a max 1% surcharge.

  • I signed up for the DJs points option. I shop heaps at DJs coughI work for themcough but I've just discovered that I can transfer the points to Velocity ao hopefully in the near future I can get a return trip to Melbourne for free :)

I hope your not too sick from all the coughing.

      I found another deal here:https://www.americanexpress.com/au/content/platinum-edge-credit-card/?intlink=au-amex-cardshop-carousel-platinumedge

$195 annual fee, but you will get a free domestic flight each year.

I think its a better deal than DJ, because you will break-even every year, while DJ will only break even at the first year.

      • If you're going for AMEX cards, you might wanna go for the AMEX Explorer instead. Better earn rates for groceries and petrol, $400 Travel Credit to cover the $395 annual fee. Alas, it depends on your daily spendings

        • I'm not a huge spender and still living at home. What else would you recommend? I would like a AmEx card, with Visa/Mastercard.

          Currently, I'm thinking of:
          - The Platinum Edge Credit Card
          - Citibank plus debit card

I have also looked into the 28Degree card, and the BankWest cards. But I don't think it's needed?

Plat edge is better for groceries and petrol
explorer would be better for all other regular purchases

        • @tuvz: That's not true. It's the same for petrol, Plat Edge do come ahead slightly in groceries, but that would definitely be offset by the higher regular purchases rate. The much larger bonus for EXP would also offset the Plat Edge's groceries advantage.

        • @Redwood:

you are forgetting that 2 plat edge ascent points are worth more then 2 Exp gateway points..(2 airline miles vs 1.5)

          anyway..

holding both cards is the way to go imo as they complement each other and both annual fees can be offset by the free flight and the $400 travel credit.
