Mobile Carrier for Canada + USA

Does anyone have recommendations on what mobile carrier or plan I should be getting if I'm planning to spend one week in Toronto (No US transfer airports) and then one week in NYC? I just need a few gigs of high speed data on my Galaxy S7 in each city and shouldn't need to make phone calls.

I can't seem to figure this out as most people suggest activating a T-Mobile plan once you land in the US, but you can't do it if you're planning to use it in Canada first?

I would suggest T-mobile, but regarding the activation… I read conflicting info.
This site indicates it might be possible:

Canadian carriers are really expensive compared to the yank ones.

    Tricky…

AT&T is like A$67 ish for 6GBs for use in the US and Canada. The issue you'll have is activating it. The sim needs to actually 'ping' a US tower to activate.

It's all well and good setting it up online and recharging it but to actually activate the service you need to be in the US.

I'd look at cheaper Canadian carriers.

Bell looks the same as AT&T http://www.bell.ca/Mobility/Cell_phone_plans/Prepaid_plans

    Good luck.

Canada definitely had some of the most expensive prepaid/postpaid mobile phone plans I have experienced in all my travels.

i did this 2 weeks ago, I walked into AT&T and paid $60 for 6GB to use in both Canada and US for a month, was brilliant, AT&T network in the US and Rogers in Canada, best of both.

    • Did you go to US first or Canada first?

      • bought the sim card in Seattle, then went to Vancouver then to NYC then to Toronto then back to LA via Vegas.

    • Hi ols108 - can you share what was the actual product you purchased at the AT&T store? I'm travelling to the US in a month and want to make I get the correct SIM/deal. Thanks for your help!

      • not 100% sure what its called, I just walked into the AT&T and said I need a sim card that will work in both US and Canada, guy told me $60 for a month with 6GB, I said I need 3 of these ( wife and daughter) and we waited like 20mins and it was all done.

  • Metro PCS - $40 - unlimited text, calls and data (2GB fast, then capped at a lower speed). Unlimited Spotify, Pandora, etc as well! Only for the US
