Porting out of TPG across to Telstra Troubles

Hi Folks,

After months of terrible internet speeds and constant dropouts from TPG I have decided to switch to Telstra. However Telstra has come back to me saying they are unable to port my number across from TPG and I will need to get a new number. They claim that TPG has given me a recycled number and the exchange its on is not suitable for porting across to Telstra.

I contacted TPG who advised me that this number is their own number and not one shared by Telstra but if Telstra puts a port request through they will honour it. Telstra claim that this number is not on their system and therefore cannot port.

So, it seems the only way around this is to get a new number. I am not too keen on doing this but I also want to get away from TPG as their adsl2+ speeds are only giving me a max speed of 4.5mbps and this usually drops to 2.5 after about 18/24 hours. So I am forced to reset the modem and my speeds boost up to 4.5 again. I also keep getting NX_Domain errors when browsing sites and after resetting modem this errors disappear for another 24hrs,

Is anyone able to explain the REAL reason why I am unable to port my number across and what, if any workaround there might be?
Also considering lodging an ombudsman complaint as it seems to be TPG did not disclose that the number given to me when signing up with them cannot be ported out.

What are people's thoughts?

  • Faulty modem?

    • Its possible. I have considered that to be the issue, but tbh I am sick of the ADSL speeds regardless and given telstra are able to supply Cable, for $20 more, I am keen on going with them. With discounts I am getting the L bundle (1000GB) and basic foxtel (basically a bonus as I would not pay for it) for $100

  • problem with the number port will most likely be telstra's. They really don't like bringing over numbers from other networks because of how old some of their systems are. If you want to keep the TPG number, port it to a voip provider.

    • Thanks for that, any way to convince/strong arm them into porting my number across as that will be the most convenient.
I will look into a VOIP Provider. Any you can recommend?

I've had nothing but positive experiences with MyNetFone's VoiP service over many years.

        • Had a look at them, Looks cheap if you want to park a number for a while $10/month no contract.
What hardware do you use? we dont have a voip capable phone atm. Considering it might be worth buying a cheap one off ebay and the $20 adapter they offer.

          @Drifta:
We use a Cisco Voip adapter (the little $20 box) connected to an ordinary cordless handset. It's nothing special, but works very well for the rare occasions when we use it.

Also, see this special for Whirlpool members: https://www.mynetfone.com.au/whirlpool/VoIP/Plans/WhirlpoolS…

        • @klaw81: Thanks heaps for that. That is perfect for me, enough time to accept calls and give people the new number without paying too much, just hardware. Telstra have offered to give me a $50 credit for the first month which will cover the cost for me to buy the hardware and set this up. Hopefully they can port my number away from TPG, unlike telstra.

Have a look at siptalk.com.au - go for the whirlpool special.
Comparable call costs (cheaper) no monthly fee as well.
I would just deposit $10 with them and see how long it lasts.
Form memory landline calls 6.6c untimed and mobiles 7.7c per minute.

      • unfortunately no. telstra are not flexible at all.

I use MNF on their whirlpool saver plan. Network is more stable than the siptalk one, so I don't mind paying a bit more. I've heard their customer service can suck, but once I was setup I've never needed to contact them again.

        • Thanks for the feedback on the network, Had a chat to siptalk today then found out I need to give TPG 30 days notice :(
Will probably jump on to one of these once I get my hardware and I am close to the 30 day mark

        • @Drifta:

Don't wait too long. TPG suck at everything, so they suck at porting too. If you're looking to port in 30 days time, you'll want to have your port request submitted by Siptalk or MNF a minimum of 2 weeks before you want the port to happen.

        • @terminal2k: Thanks for the tip, I was looking to port in 3 weeks so Ill put the request in at the end of this week.

        • @Drifta:

Be careful with your dates as porting to VoiP if done before the ADSl will cancel your ADSL connection and you may be in for some pain reconnecting your ADSL with a new provider as they MAY try to sting you for a new connection.

        • @wildbill: Thanks for that, I've already had telstra connect cable at my place so have both adsl and cable going at the moment. Just now need to port my number before telstra connect the premises with the new number they are giving me, so as to not cancel the number I have right now. Im going to contact telstra and see if they can push back the phone number connection to make sure all the dates line up. The 30 day TPG notice period stuffed up my plans. Glad to be rid of TPG after all these clauses designed to suck you dry.

  • Try to buy a new starter pack form woolies or coles and port the numebr across first then to Telstra

    • Wrong product :P

Post is about home phone not Mobile

  • TPG=bad, so you go to Telstra? Why not a proper ISP like iiNet or Internode?

Perhaps look at telecube.com.au for VoIP, its cheap and has a reasonable user interface, and good support too. Porting is very easy with them.

    • Yup, I went to telstra mainly because of this: http://imgur.com/a/ooMOT and thats without NBN.

You can see a more than 10x improvement. Only Telstra are able to offer this. Happy to put up with a day or two's network outage as I can simply use my mobile hotspot in that emergency, at least not suffering daily.

Will certainly checkout telecube, I heard that was more of higher end service as they are part of the same group who own siptalk (mentioned above). Will be registering the port request in the next few days

Op, if you want you can pm your details and I'll get someone to investigate from Telstra side if it's possible..(I work for Telstra)

    • Thanks supasaiyan, I will take you up on the offer.
