What to Bid to Upgrade to Business Class Seat? Is It Worth It?

I am flying cattle class on Virgin next week from Canberra to Melbourne.

I received an email asking if I wanted to put in a bid to upgrade my seat to Business Class. Would you be prepared to take on the offer, and if so, what would you be prepared to bid. The flight is about one hour and 10 mins.

For a 70 minutes half of which will be take off, ascent, descent and landing, I wouldn't bother. Don't they have minimum bids?

  • i'd value it at $30

  • I have the same problem.
Flight from KUL to PER on Malaysia Air (assuming I actually arrive).
Offer to upgrade to business, the problem is there are 6 of us in the booking so whatever I bid will be multiplied by 6!

    • How much is the bid per person out of interest?

      • From my experience the lowest bid you can make is 560 MYR or about AU$180

    • and probably not all 6 of you will get an upgrade, if at all

You literally get to cruising altitude from MEL while they rush down the aisle to hand out crackers and collect rubbish before the cockpit echoes "cabin crew prepare for landing". They tend to run ahead of schedule too.

Not worth it in the slightest and depending on day and time, you may not have pax next to you.

  • Bid $3.50
They'll barely get to cruising attitude before they start the descent into Melbourne.

You don't even have time to make yourself comfortable, let alone get a chance to beat it ;)

It depends if your a drinker or not,
I've won these auctions before and easily drank&ate my bids worth at the lounge before the flight, just arrive at airport early and enjoy, my wife and I once bid $30 each and had a 6 hour layover in Mexico City business lounge, really depends on the individual.

  • I would skip the bid option, get to the airport early and ask for row 3 window seat please

  • It's worth $20-30 max for the plate of food/drink and seat size. It's a super short flight. I often fly this route and sit in these seats

  • What about access to the CBR VA lounge - isn't that also a consideration - definitely worth $3.50. :)

  • If you're not a lounge user usually maybe. The novelty wears off fast
