Citibank Plus in Japan

Hi,

Heading to Japan in 2 weeks time.

I know the Citibank card is fee free if I withdraw from a Citibank ATM.

Are there any other ATM's I can take money out that is also fee free. What about ATM's in Post Offices and 7/11?

Thanks

Something to note - Citibank now operates under a different name in Japan. They now operate as SMBC Trust Bank. From my experiences in Japan what this means is you won't find any Citibank branded ATM's (which is confusing at first when Google maps says you are right on top of one) but the SMBC Trust ATM's are fee free. Announcement is here: http://www.findmyciti.com/jp/

SMBC did not accept my citi cards in Japan. So better use 7-Eleven or Japan Post.

      • That's surprising. Worked fine with my Citi debit card.

I think 7/11 ones are also free

  • I visited Tokyo in May this year. there was no fee for Australian citi bank credit card. Funny thing was even in Tokyo.. the capital of Japan, Post office did not accept credit card so I had to withdraw money from ATM

  • Japan Post ATMs had no withdraw fees when I was there a couple of years ago.

  • I just went to the convenience stores. I don't think they were Citibank. I always thought that you could withdraw from any ATM… Have things changed?

    • Some ATMs sport the logos but only work for Japanese issued cards. 7/11 should work.

  • All ATM's will have no foreign transaction fees using the Citibank card.

Some will have ATM withdrawal fees (equivalent to when you use an ATM in Australia that isn't your bank and prompts that it'll charge you $2 or similar).

Can confirm that 7/11 ATM's have no fees.

  • 7/11 and JP Post are both free

I was reading the fees and charges https://www.citibank.com.au/global_docs/pdf/Feesandcharges.pā€¦

It says that any outward funds to local Australia bank will attract $10. I'm guessing this means you just withdraw whatever remaining funds you have in the account after travelling, instead of transferring it over to your daily non Citibank account to avoid the $10 fee?

That's if you do a transfer over the counter (vs transfer online).

What's that got to do with withdrawing from a citibank plus account in Japan? You're talking about outwards funds transfers to another australian bank account.

    • Also you need to read the header for the section you are quoting it says

Local & International Payments and Foreign Currency Services (Excludes Citibank Plus Transaction and Citibank Online Saver Accounts) ….

"Excludes Citibank Plus" which is the card being talked about

Like all PDS, they arent that easy to read šŸ˜

      • Ah thanks for that..

Yeah my comment is a bit OOT. A shameless hi-jack to the OP post. But I couldn't help but ask!

  • Thanks everyone.. that clears things up.

    7/11s are easy to find

    • You can also find 7/11 branded ATMs in subway stations. Withdrawing from post offices are also fee-free (look for the Plus logo on the ATM)

I went to Japan with the same card and no problems at all.

      • You can also find 7/11 branded ATMs in subway stations

You'll find them in some airports too. I usually grab some Yen from one of them as soon as I'm off the plane.

  • After Citi sold off their retail branches I found that ATMs in Lawsons
no longer recognised my Citi card … found 7/11 and Circle-K still worked
    just fine.
