Red Light Camera Question

Silly question, does the camera flash you if you take a right turn after Red? Also, does the camera flash you from the back or front?

  • I think it gets you as you cross the line and it should get you from the back, so it shouldn't make any difference if you are turning, I may be wrong and happy to be corrected, but this is what I have heard.

  • +1

The sensors are at the line. Once you're past the sensors you will not trigger the camera. Camera takes the picture from the back.

  • Once you're past the sensors you will not trigger the camera.

You will if the light is already red, as in the OP's example.

    • You wont. The red light camera is triggered by an inductive loop in the road usually placed just in front of the white line. If you are already over the line and past the sensor, there is no way you will trigger the camera.

Anyway, to answer the OP's question, there is a definitive answer here: http://roadsafety.transport.nsw.gov.au/speeding/speedcameras…. It would be the same for all states, since the cameras work the same way.

      • It does state in the link that there may not be sensors in the road. I would imagine that all the new ones do not use inductive loops. I have worked in road construction and have yet to see inductive loops placed in the road for red light cameras. Given how often the inductive loops fail I would suspect the it is all done digitally with newer gear.

        • That is an interesting theory. I was under the impression that the speed cameras will use either radar, laser or inductive sensors, but red light cameras always use inductive sensors. I really doubt any other technology could really tell if you are running a red light or not. Plus aren't inductive sensors required anyway for triggering the lights to change?

        • @djsweet: yes, inductive loops are required to trigger lights, but there are very rarely sensors past the stop line, except in a right turn situation where they want to sense a car waiting to turn past the line.

Now you can buy a cheap security camera for your house and software that will detect motion in a selected area, but ignore another area in the field of view I'm pretty sure that the modern speed/red light cameras can detect motion in the intersection quite easily.

  • In VIC it Red light cameras take two picture once when you cross the stop line before the signal and the second when you drive thru the signal. If you are in front of the stop line (if you are turning right) and turn right when the light turns right, some cameras take a pic (Happened to me few times) but you will not receive a fine. I am not sure of other states but expect them to be same.

  • Thanks guys, I'm not entirely sure what my situation is. I know a flash went off when i was turning right on orange but wasn't sure if another car to my left crossed the marked line when going straight. I'll be waiting by the mailbox for the next two weeks.

    • Why next two weeks.. They will send you fine with in few days. They waiting for your money or anyone tax payer's money who tries to brake the law ( willingly or unwillingly)

    • Could it have been one of those combo speed and red-light cameras? They could've busted the guy going over the speed limit, rather than the red-light?

  • What I have been told (and can't remember now where from) is that the camera will only go off if the lights have turned red and your back tyres cross the white line (first one I think). So if your front tyres are in the intersections and the lights go red, it won't go off. If you roll forward (as people do), as soon as your back tyres cross the white line, you're done for.

    • i had the same thing occur this morning. i was coming up to an intersection on st kilda road (melbourne)and the lights were red. i started rolling forward as i saw the lights going through their sequence (knowing that i'm getting a green light shortly) and saw two flashes (assuming they are the red light cameras). I thought my front wheels were the only part of the car that was past the pedestrian crossing. This being the case, will I still receive a fine?

      • If you stopped then possibly not. I.e. the two photos show the car as not moving.
That being said, trying to pre-empt the lights is a bit silly as you save next to no time

  • If you cross the line when it's red, then yes, it will get you even when turning right. If you've already entered the intersection and the lights turn red while you're waiting, you're supposed to finish your turn, and will not be fined.
