eBay seller promises to refund VAT after purchase has arrived

What do you think? Should I trust them? They are a huge seller. 40k+ feedback and 99.8% positive.
I have the messages on record on my eBay account so any eBay worker can read them and confirm that the seller has agreed to refund me x amount of pounds after the goods have arrived.

Has anyone dealt with this situation before?

Why do they want you to pay it in the first place? My (very limited) understanding is that VAT doesnt apply to Aus purchases.

    • I don't want to pay it but the seller doesn't want to accept my eBay Offer of the original amount subtracting VAT, instead asking me to purchase at the full price and then refunding me VAT amount when the purchase has arrived.

Why does he want to wait to refund the vat when the purchase arrives ? The refund should be immediate. They shouldnt be charging you vat period for any reason.

Please remember: eBay is primarily a consumer marketplace. Therefore, VAT registered sellers are not permitted to add VAT to the final item price after a buyer has won the item

It's in the best interest of the seller to charge and then refund afterwards. It makes it easier to deal with buyers that use a non-vat state address for offers, then turn around and use an UK or eu member address at checkout.

    Should you trust them? No

Many years ago the same thing happened to me. They wouldn't refund the VAT after the purchase. I raised an ebay dispute asking for a partial refund (of the VAT only) as agreed upon prior to the purchase. After no response from the seller, ebay found in my favour and refunded me the whole amount. I did feel a little sorry for the seller, but karma went to bite them in the arse. They could have just responded to the dispute and did a partial refund. If they had contacted me after that asking for the money minus the VAT, I probably would have sent it to them, but never heard from them despite being very communicative prior the purchase.

  • Thanks for the input. Would eBay rule in my favor if the seller refused to refund the VAT? I have records of him on myeBay messages promising to.
