Sim cards - do you link to your drivers license?

Hi Everyone,

Long time ozbargainer but dont use it as much now that I am mainly living in Hong Kong (at time of posting am in Melbourne as here for two weeks).

I wanted to ask about sim cards when you purchase and activate a new one do you link it to your drivers license?

I believe we are meant to have only 5 linked to us at any one time for personal use.

What do people do? And am I meant to deactivate or cancel a sim or unlink it to my drivers license or ID?

I think over the years I've purchased about 20 sim cards, some I Forgot to activate or some I use for a month

  • AFAIK there is no limit however expect delays sometimes on activating while they check that you aren't selling drugs or being a terrist nutter keep Australia safe from having fun and terrists that don't exist.

You require a valid form of ID to activate a SIM which can include a drivers license or other documents.

  • thanks for replying, just wasnt sure if there was any downside to linking like 20 or 30 sims to your account for ozbargain deals or promotions etc (or cheap data)

    • i have about 30 currently activated with telstra. as Diji1 said the government expects retailers to fill out forms in regards to terrorists and drug dealers when you buy more than 5. but those are usually burner phones and they obviously already have ways to bypass such so its nonsense. im sure there are many ozbargainers with more than 5 accounts e.g signing up new numbers to pass phone verifications and such. there are many legitimate reasons to have multiple numbers e.g - you have accounts for your children, website developers wanting to test on different phones etc

      • I reckon I beat 30 over the past few years. But they do expire eventually and leave your 'account'

        • 30 active at one time or just in total?

        • @kima: I would have activated 30+ over a span of a few years I think sims expire 6 months of no recharge so I'd have maybe 10-15 on my account, if you're doing nothing illegal with sims they don't care.

  • Linking simcards to DRL is the same 'security theater' as taking your shoes off for flight and other 'terrorist' nonsense.

  • hah thanks guys!
