Samsung J1 Mini 4G Vodafone from Coles for $99, Good Deal?

Hey guys, after a new phone for the wife (currently Galaxy S3 but having some issues). Saw this deal at Coles and wondered if it would make a good replacement and whether it was easy/cheap to get an unlock code? Otherwise any other suggestions for a decent phone under $100? She's currently with Vaya as a carrier. Cheers!

  • The J1 would be a downgrade over the S3 though, maybe you could fix the S3

  • +1

Don't think the J1 Mini is much of a phone

  • Thanks guys, figured alot of the budget phones would be a downgrade. She doesn't do a whole lot with it, would just be happy with something 'new and slim' really! Just after the best phone around the $100 budget I guess (I know there's not alot great around that range, but best we can get that's easy/cheap to unlock).

    • The Ulephone Metal is a pretty decent replacement for the S3, it would be much faster too as well as having better build quality (aluminium construction).

Other cheap alternatives include the Xiaomi Mi4C

Let me put it this way — there are no great android phones for around $100 in the Australian retail world. (Some of them you might consider 'good' enough for the basic user, e.g Huawei's)
Much of them are fairly low end budget options that have compromises one way or the other, usually with speed, storage or usability (e.g screen resolution and size)

      • Thanks mate, both of those look like good spec for the price. Any preference on which is better? Have you shopped with either store, are they reputable companies and do you know what shipping time, warranty etc is like with them?
        Thanks!

        • Gearbest has had a bad reputation although from my past 10 or so transactions none had issues. They were banned for almost a year, but now have been given a second chance and are allowed to post again.

Geekbuying is popular on Ozbargain, with some members representing the store posting here and it is generally considered safe to buy from.

          Just FYI:

          1. The Ulefone does not have an e-compass — it can't tell which way you are facing when being used for Pokemon Go or Google Maps.

          2. The Xiaomi does not have an SD card slot. There is a 32GB model of the phone, but it costs a lot more.

          3. The screen resolution of the Ulefone is 720p, while the Xiaomi is 1080p. In terms of battery life, the Ulefone might win due to the lower res display.

        • @scrimshaw: Thanks for the info, looks like the Xiaomi from Geekbuying might be the way to go then. Cheers!
