Fitness Tracker Users Gain Weight

Many fitness trackers in the past have been shown to be woefully inaccurate despite the entities selling them insisting that they can save your life as though the little computer things are actually magical devices.

Now according to a new study they also appear to fail at making you lose weight. And I don't mean nothing at all happened because in fact the users of fitness trackers gained weight over a 2 year period.

They are inaccurate for steps, sleep and heart rate so that's why I wonder.

    • My cheapo original Miband was actually pretty good with tracking sleep.

    WRONG!

I don't see where it says they gained weight. It just says they didn't lose as much weight as the group that didn't wear the devices.

Among young adults with a BMI between 25 and less than 40, the addition of a wearable technology device to a standard behavioral intervention resulted in less weight loss over 24 months. Devices that monitor and provide feedback on physical activity may not offer an advantage over standard behavioral weight loss approaches.

If you ask yourself why, you might conclude the group with the tracker was more focused on fitness (rather than just weight loss) and actually converted their weight to muscle mass. It is not uncommon during weight loss to slow or stop losing weight as muscle is built up instead of shedding fat.

  • since when were fitness trackers supposed to help you lose weight?

people need to take more responsibility for their diet and lifestyles

I've had a pedometer in the drawer for years, and I just keep getting fatter. Looks like it is time for an ACCC complaint!

Yep, same here. I keep downloading pedometer apps and filling up my storage, but no weight loss…

        • well thats why, obviously you'll weigh more if you have more apps, you need to have less to lose weight
