Buy MacBook from DickSmith (eBay) or JB Hi-Fi

I need a new macbook 12" (rose gold) as a gift, I have been looking for the lowest price (at the moment) and have a dilemma… whether buy it from JB Hi-Fi (10% off sale) for $1798 or through dicksmith (eBay store) for $1475 (20% off eBay sale). Local stock is preferable but thats a savings of over $300… any advice will be greatly appreciated (experiences buying imported MacBooks/dicksmith?). Thanks! :D

If there's something wrong, are you close enough to just take it to an Apple store?

Surely it doesn't matter who you get it from then, as long as it's new and sealed…?

    • Thanks for your response! Yeah that is what I was thinking! But then… I never bought such expensive item online and was wondering any prior experience buying from dicksmith (kogan) considering that they no longer sell local stock? To my surprise, the poll shows a significant preference for JB Hi-Fi over Dicksmith ($300+ savings)… :/

  • Yeah, it's not always about how much you save though. With local stock you're covered by consumer rights if something happens after the 12 Apple warranty (if you don't buy Apple care). With Dick Smith/Kogan, if you need to return it it's going to be a LOT of hassle. And especially as it's a gift, whoever you are giving it to would appreciate the extra $300 if it means they can easily walk into a store if it's needs to be fixed.

    • Thanks for your response, you got a very valid point! But I am just wondering "if something happens" ? like a system failure? I got some apple products and never got any issue after purchasing them.

Yeah, but just because things don't go wrong with Apple products often doesn't mean they don't at all. And by that I mean any defects.

      • I don't think this guy has any idea about an Apple warranty. Check here: http://www.apple.com/au/legal/statutory-warranty/

Your item will come with an Apple limited warranty, and you contact Apple directly. It's always been that way.

        • Right, and if you take an Apple Macbook back to an Apple store in Australia when it is a grey import then you are going to have a hard time after 12 months.

  • It's Kogan not Dick Smith. Dick Smith went out of business.

and here I was thinking no one would actually have been fooled by Kogans shenanigans.

    • Kogan bought out the online component of Dick Smith when it went bust.

  • Also, you have to be wary of import tax for items over $1000. I was considering buying a Macbook Pro myself from the Dick Smith website, but with postage at around $50, plus GST on top of the advertised price because it's coming from Hong Kong (or where ever the Macs actually come from, have read that they are grey imports from the Middle East), it's just a hell of a lot easier just to buy from a store here. Or, get 10% with Apple's education discount if you're a student.

  • Buy the Mac book Air deal posted a little bit ago.

    • I am very tempted to buy that one but missus prefers the gold rose one :/ (or should I just give her a cover…)

      • yes, because of the high costs, my apple products have cases, which makes the colour of it pretty redundant. i got a really nice marble cover for my macbook for about $15, its so pretty! Also covers give it a bit of 'grip'.

    ARE YOU A SHILL?

Basically the same post just different items and on Reddit.

And BOTH of you call it Dick Smith instead of what everyone else calls it: Kogan.
