Just a note to anyone not looking too closely. Phone need to have MicroUSB so iphone and any USB Type C phones need not apply :-P

    • +1

And device needs to accept OTG which rules out cheaper Android phones, but Tablets should be fine.

All discussed in HN deal last time offered at $14 earlier this year.

    • Anyone know if plugging the tv tuner into a usb C (or any other proprietary connector) to micro usb adaptor would work?

      • Depends on the adapter. If it's a usb c to micro otg / host adapter, then it should work.

  • Just a note on the TV tuner , read the reviews before you buy it. Not very promising

    • Yeah was excited for train use but…. judging by reviews portable antenna doesn't work very well.

      • The app to control it sounds terrible as well.

        • +8

I have one and it works perfectly fine where i am in sydney. People whinge about anything and everything.

        • +6

@dlakers3peat: Cool, can we all come and stay at your place? :p

        • @dlakers3peat:

So the portable antenna works ok on the train?

        • +1

          @RtN:

mine has trouble in a car works when at a set of lights, breaks up when in motion, on a train it will be worse. Using the house connection it's brilliant…so whilst stationary with reception it's as it should be.

Word of warning use padTV instead of Dlinks own.

        • +1

@Cobrin: That's basically what reviews said: good in one place, shit in motion.

I'm going try grab one just for the hell of it. Sounds like it'll work at the cricket and gym … and I don't think I've watched free to air for … a decade maybe? LEL.

Also good for power blackouts and doctors waiting rooms.

      • I doubt any of them would work at all, let alone well on trains.

      • This is due to the signal being digital. I forked out $1400+ for a digital TV setup in my car - its a 7" AV/GPS Nav system. It behaves exactly the same, soon as you start driving, picture breaks up. Its cos we're on Digital TV signals - if it were analogue , the picture would not break up when moving in a car, on a train or elsewhere… I wish they still broadcast analogue as well as DTV.

        • +1

          I don't.

Don't want to share the road with people watching free to air, it's bad enough that they watch Netflix and porn while driving :p

      • Australia has poor DVB TV transmissions, compared to most countries (in regards to both strength and type). There aren't too many places where you can get away with portable antennas for DTV reception, even in the home (really need DVB-H for that). However if you are in such an area, then the portable antenna with this may work. Either way, it's not really a limitation of this piece of hardware.

    • +1

Yeah, just read this review too - http://www.gadgetguy.com.au/product/d-link-portable-digital-… - I think I will pass :(

      • +1

        For earlier version App.
See others experience in previous HN deal for these at $14.

    • +5

BTW easternculture, have you actually received that $78 Philips monitor yet?

      • No it was something else I ordered 2 weeks ago :(

        • Hmm I don't see why he got negged? He is just letting me know.

        • +6

          @edfoo:

Because he didn't bother replying to anyone about it in the original thread.

Make that of what you will.

        • +1

          @CVonC:
          Embarrassing. But no biggie.
It's been pointed out more times in the other post - than if EC had posted there.

EC need not have replied at all, leaving those who missed out on the monitor (like me) envious😈

Of course, I've never made a mistake here…

But I've corrected mistakes or updated to the correct info as soon as possible, in the post where I made the error. Easier if you don't post much, unlike EC with almost 2000 deals.

Ah, but if we were all perfect… It would be a boring place😯

          @Infidel:

Made himself look worse by ignoring a simple question and then answering it in another thread. Why hide from the original thread? Who cares if it was a mistake. Manning up to it in the original thread would've at least saved him some face.

        • Bahaha, don't lose hope: I ordered same monitor for $278 from OW and it took ages.

        • +1

          @Diji1:
All orders have been cancelled & money ($78) refunded. I think it's time to move on - to next deal.

        • +2

Did you also get your 1000 Kogan SIMs?

          Don't leave us hanging.

    • +4

Weirdly enough, it works pretty well in my room at home and without adjusting anything, I can get half the channels. If I move it a bit closer to the Window, I can get all thirty something channels in Sydney.

  • -4

    but for $14 who cares

    • +18

      I'd rather not waste $14.

      • +5

lol. There's nothing wrong with the tv card - it can be connected to a larger antenna if thats what you want. At $14 it's a steal.

Tell you what, $14 for this + $29 for the wireless speaker below makes a pretty good sub $50 Kris Kringle present for anyone with an android device.

        • +1

You give $50 KK presents?!! (shock horror)

        • +3

@RussellPeters: Haha. Family does instead of giving everyone a real present…

        • *Does not work with all Android devices.
Requires micro-USB that work as OTG & fairly recent OS for app.

Discussed in HN deal last time offered at $14 earlier this year.

    • +6

you can buy eneloops with $14

  • +2

Not part of that sale, but the Logitech X50 Bluetooth Wireless Speaker is also on sale going for $29:

TV tuner is pretty good. Bought one last time

  • Can the TV tuner use on TV? I have another TV without antenna connection, currently using Mediaportal to stream.

    • Connects via MicroUSB……pretty sure your TV wont have that

      • +1

        Yeah … I knew just asking … :p

        • By a cheap android box…boom. Problem solved

        • @britta:

Android box and my TV antenna what related?

        • +3

          @superforever:

TV antenna —> portable tuner —> android box —> TV

          Is your media portal android?

        • @britta:

I have no TV antenna on that side of the room, I might have to try an indoor one but my area is not good even outdoor antenna I have to put amplifier.

        • @superforever: Extra long antenna cable?

        • @ilikeradiohead:

A very long cabling need to run and reception is not so good in my area. It may have problem split another one.

    • First time I've heard of this mediaportal. Downloaded it but have no idea how to use it. Any tips?

      • +1

Just standard install on a HTPC with digital TV tuner card. It has two components TV server and TV client, just use the TV server configuration to setup live TV channels and use the TV client configuration to setup video, music folders, etc.

You should also check out Kodi ….

        • Thanks mate. I thought it wouldn't need a tuner.

          I do have Kodi yea.

        • +1

          @TLZ:

You must have a tuner for live TV.

  • +1

The tuner is fine if you connect it to a home antenna. If your using that dangling thing that comes with it it's useless.

    • +2

That defeats the purpose it being "portable" :(

    • +2

I could see this would work well with a Android Box

    • +1

I bought one last time and it's not useless, it works great for me.
It all depends where you live or want to use it.

  • Grabbed 2x tuners, look like fund.

Grabbed 2x tuners, look like fund.

      Look like refund …. :p

I had the TV tuner for an old nexus 7 tablet i had (a bargain too good to resist listed here on Ozbargain! :P ), and it was next to useless. $14 is a significant discount from the RRP, but even at that price, it's overpriced.

  • +1

I wonder if this would be useful in a car. I have an android tablet hooked up as my media system, Would be cool if it also was able to receive TV.
Does anyone know if a car radio antenna would be able to pick up Digital TV Signals when connected with the F type adapter?

  • +1

Interested to know if anyones plugged one of these into an Rpi, and also if it supports DTV2 later mpeg formats. But great price for fun anyway..

  • +7

Use the PadTV app instead of the crappy DLink one :

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.padtv&hl=e…

The tuner is not sensitive so you need to have a good signal, other than that, great little gadget.

    • The two apps look identical to me?

      • Geniatech is the manufacturer. Dlink just put their logo on everything.

  • +1

Used one for a couple of days. First time I used it it was alright, picked up a few (three, four, perhaps even five.. my memory is a little hazy) of the major channels. But the second and third times I tried to use it it couldn't pick up a channel and hold it for more than a few seconds before losing reception. In an urban area close to the CBD as well, so there shouldn't have been any reception issues. Maybe other people have had better experiences with the device, but if I were to give an honest opinion of my own experience I'd say keep the $14.

  • Interesting. Don't hear much about TV tuners these days. Never heard of one for an android phone.
Was hoping it was for PC via USB.

I wonder if it could be re-purposed to something else, could be a great deal if so.

    • Might be able to get it to work with an android emulator on PC

    • +4

My guess is that you could use this adapter to plug in to a regular USB port on your PC, and then record from it using various open source DVR software.

It seems to be a Geniatech PT115 which is apparently supported in MuMuDVB and I expect others.

No guarantees, but for $14 you could give it a shot.

  • This thing is only useful if you are outside. You can forget about getting a signal indoors with the included antenna.

    • +1

I can receive a signal indoors with the included antenna.

  • +2

Picked up two TV tuners from the Rundle Mall store (Adelaide) - had heaps on the shelf, still all marked $48 but scan at $14 (one for me and another for a colleague). Both work well - signal is a bit weak with the antenna that comes with it, but we're on the 14th floor of our work building around lots of electrical equipment, so that probably doesn't help.

Still … $14, absolute bargain for live TV on my phone :)

  • Will it use up more battery with this device? I mean except the screen on.

    • Yes. You're using an app to stream it.

    • The device itself also draws power from the phone battery

(unless an external batter is used and you may also need the "right" OTG adapter also if my experience on Nvidia Shield Tablet is anything to go by: some OTG cables do not allow charging to occur from an external battery while a device is using the OTG adapter).

  • Is that wide range extender good?

    • Not bad- I used one for a couple of months. Range is relatively good, and it was very stable (no dropouts, no need to restart it even once)…

Was able to push a consistent 20+ mbps from ~8m away with a couple of walls in between (extender 4m away from main router, device 4m from extender with a couple of walls).

      • You probably need to change your main router if it can't even work for ~8m on the first place?

        • Had a couple of 'legacy' devices connected which didn't have much receive power (only managed ~5mbps) struggling with a couple of walls in between, so the extender was a cheap option.

  • Would this work better with one of those portable antennae connected instead of the provided loop antennae?

  • +1

Can this work as a Tv tuner for Kodi on android to get the pvr working?

  • +1

Bought one a while ago, have tried several locations, absolutely useless, and the app crashes all the time.

    Used in Android 4 & 5 tabs and phones, same result - it's not me, it's you…

  • Could I plug it into an AV Tuner (Yamaha) to get tv on my projector?

    • +1

      No

  • +1

WTF i just went to the deal from the link on Ozbargain and this chat window pops up… https://imgur.com/a/wbHq8

    • +4

You must be new on here ^_^

      • is that normal? I've never seen it before

    • Oh so that's what happens when you let Gerry run all his ridiculous scripts on your pooter. I think I'll leave those blocked :)

      • How do you block them?

  • Great product. Works perfectly for me for all channels with the included antenna.

  • nice one will give it a go..

  • Anybody know of a USB-C to Micro USB adapter that's actually approved and safe to use? I know there were bucketloads of dodgy ones on eBay.

  • Has anybody tried this with Raspberry PI?

  • Doesnt work on Huawei Y550, Is there any cheap Android phone this will work on? iphone 6S is my main phone by the way

  • Cheers. Might try this on my Nvidia Shield ATV.

  • Has anyone got the tv tuner to work with Windows Phone?
