TV or Projector?

We're building a house with a dedicated media room and not sure whether to go with a TV or a projector. Audio side is already taken care of (Onkyo receiver, Accusound speakers (x5), Wharfedale sub)

Points to note:

-budget is up to $3k-$4k
-room size is 4m x 4.5m - can be blacked out
-purpose will movies, Netflix, Xbox and Wii gaming, and occasional TV
-For gaming, I enjoy FPS so input lag needs to be low
-UHD not a necessity

I'm leaning towards a projector purely for the size but interested to hear any other thoughts. And if we decide on a projector, what are the brands to go for?

    I have an acer H6510BD

18ms of Input Lag, best for any DLP projector, under $900

Only issue I find is Dust accumulation but easy enough to pull apart and maintain, 2 year warranty
A good performer, you also have the W1070 BenQ as well which has good input lag

Not sure on 3LCD input lag but both have their pros and cons

    Pros - Size
    - Good for movies / gaming
    - very low input lag
    - Lens shift function on the higher end projectors
    - can heat a room up in winter

Cons - Lamp replacement cost, about $130 per lamp for the acer, every 5000 hours
    - Electricity usage, 190w and higher based on lamp type and usage
    - Maintainence and Dust Management, projectors are more suspectible to dust and blobs after a few years
    - Placement is limited based on room and where you can mount it

Overall, I have a projector in my room, its bloody awesome and I got it for under $800 a year ago, tends to warm the room up, much like a TV I guess
Havent looked back though, once you go Full HD projection over 2m, you don't go back

Maybe get a wall mounted Tv and a Projector with a electric screen, best of both worlds :)

With all the deals on at the moment, you'd have change left from 5k easy

    • Thanks. Do you use a screen?

      • Nope, white wall in my room
although I am looking for an electric screen

  • If that was your budget I would get both, big TV for games and decent TV for movies. Just have a retractable screen to pull in front of the TV as required

    • Even though it's budgeted, that doesn't mean I need to spend it. If I did this, I'd want it hidden in the roof. :). But this will increase the price considerably.

The size of your room doesn't seem to be that big - how big of a picture would you be expecting? I personally think that the picture on a TV is much better than that of a projector so if the size of the picture that you want can be bought in a TV, I'd go down that path. On the other hand, if want a huge picture then the projector might be your only choice.

The position of the seats is going to be important too - the angle and distance of viewing. It might seem cool to have a huge picture, but if the seating is too close to a big picture, it would give viewers a sore neck by the end of the movie.

    • He can easily fit a 3 metre screen in that wall space. There isn't a TV in a reasonble budget that offers a 3M screen.

      • Agreed that OP can easily fit a big picture on one wall.

Assuming an average ceiling height of 2.4 meters, OP can fit a max diagonal size picture of about 4.5 metres - that would cover the whole wall, but it wouldn't be very comfortable to view at a max distance of 4.5m (which also happens to be the length of the room) for extended periods.

There are certain methods (that I don't know the exact details of) that are used to measure the optimal screen size, but in the end, it comes down to user preference.

The type of projector needs to be factored in too, depending on where it's going to sit - either a short throw or long through projector.

        • I have my projector sitting on a bedside table at the moment, my neck doesn't hurt and the image quality is fine
          1080p pixel mapped 1:1

Acer H6510BD, under 18ms input lag, gaming is better on this than any tv I have used and it does the job

placement is not a huge issue if you have the room

        • @shawncro 222:

how big is the image and how far away are you when you're watching?

        • @bobbified:

I would say over 2m in size and I am at least 2.5m away sitting on the bed watching it
          looks great

  • Projector will do a 12 foot diagonal screen in that room size, probably larger depending on speaker size (if you bought an accoustic screen or whatever they're called you could use the whole 4x2 M or whatever the wall size is).

Projector because you will feel like you have a home cinema rather than a TV room.

  • I honestly think the novelty of a large projected image will wear off, and a big tv is just so much more practical. That was certainly my experience after we had a projector for a few years. It's good that you can black out the room. But with a tv you won't need to.

Another consideration is all the extra cable management with a projector, especially if it's ceiling mounted. And whenever someone gets up they may cast a shadow.

    • I don't agree at all that it's a novelty, you either do it or you dont.

There isn't a novelty if you are using a projector for a movie / gaming experience, otherwise cinemas wouldn't exist

I think having a huge screen is better for

      • xbox and playstation split screen / 4 player, more image, everyone can see, tv split screen doesn't compare, small and crap
      • projector in a full blacked out room is a no brainer in this guys case, sure a TV would suffice but if he has the money to burn I would recommend a projector over a tv anyday and the image quality from the Acer is excellent for the price.
  • Projector has no high resolution…I'd say go for TV.
