GDAY20OFF

Hi Oz Bargain - I'll keep it short - we've opened a new subscription service for men who love colourful socks.

Each month we search for awesome socks from brands across Australia and abroad. We pick our two favourite pairs and then send them to our subscribers. RRP is anywhere from $15 - 25 per pair, and our normal monthly subscription is $28/month.

Until the end of September we're offering a permanent 20% off our monthly subscription (not just the first month). Use coupon code GDAY20OFF. Free shipping. Cancel anytime.

Good luck at $14 a pair of socks.

Are the socks Australian made? What's the level of quality? Cheers

If do don't like the style are there free exchange?

  • +1

@ShamelessBargains - we're only working with the highest quality manufacturers - current brands we use are listed here: https://gdaysocks.com.au/pages/brands Two of those companies are Australian - Barnaby and Sir Sock, one is from Hong Kong and one is from the UK.

@haz - yes, if you don't like the style you can exchange for free as long as the socks are in the original packaging. I'll make that more clear.

      Are the socks Australian made?

.. we're only working with the highest quality manufacturers

So, is the answer - yes or no?

Two of those companies are Australian …

brands are a dime a dozen, however, to actually make something requires skill beyond a sales pitch.

      • They are however the idea for subscription socks isn't. I find it very interesting that OP and two of their suppliers also think subscription socks are a great idea. Same people behind all three companies? All "Made in China" or "Made in Bangladesh" by the same factory?

Is there a genuine customer need for this? Personally I feel like I have no need for 24 pairs of socks a year, and know of no one else who would either.

    • These services are funny arnt they? There was once a pitch on Shark Tank USA for a sock service, and they would send you three socks, in case you lost one. No Shark invested in the idea.

There was also an Australian who had a service like this for underwear and also socks, he bought up large amounts of stock, but the business idea did not take off and now he still has a lot of stock and no longer operates the website, even though the business idea was over ten years ago.

Hopefully the OP has done the research on this service.

      • I can't imagine it would be a massive investment to sell socks as a subscription.

        • Yeah, you are right, the OP is likely Drop Shipping, or just on selling bulk orders from suppliers. It would be silly to buy up large amounts of stock like some people do. So its likely there is very low risk.

        • @Crownanchor:

This is why we ship on the 15th of each month and require new orders to be placed by the 10th. It gives us enough time to order from our suppliers.

Drop shipping isn't possible as we provide two different brands that we love in each subscription.

Can't say I would use it. Maybe if it was a shipment per quarter or something. Who needs a new pair of socks every 2 weeks?!

      • Thanks. This is feedback I'm seeing a lot - we may add a quarterly or every two months option.

        edit: added

    One size only?
Another reason why i'll go and get my own socks.

  • I'll never understand subscription clothing services. If I needed socks I'd rather just buy a heap at once and forget about it.

  • +4

Can I request that you send only one sock so I can struggle to find the other one?

  • +2

I've bought 6 pairs of socks over 8 years. Why would anyone spend ~$250 a year on socks??!!!!!

  • @BTRaynes - there's no need to sign up for a year. I'd expect customers to stay for 3-6 months, depending on if we're delivering socks they like.

@Martijin - yes, we decided to go with the most common men's size to start. If there is demand for other sizes, we may offer that at a later date.

@pyr0maniac - can I keep the other sock?

    • How can you measure demand when you don't give the option?
If that's the way you run this business… good luck with it.

    • You're going to wait for complaints about sizes to then introduce different sizes? Meanwhile missing out on a heap of sales …

  • I have never seen men wearing socks with a dress !! Stockings maybe!

  • Sorry but I don't need a subscription to socks.

    /capitalism

  • Why is it cheaper here? http://www.sirsock.com/subscription/ (apart from the current 5 day special)

  • Manrags offered the first month for $2, then $15 each month after for one pair. The idea was that they sent crazy loud socks so you could stand out. Still an insane price though. I'll stick with my plain black 3 for $2 Kmart socks. All the same so I never need to try to find matching pairs.

  • I'm interested in this because I love new colourful socks, but the code didn't work for the prepaid 3 months socks.

Also, what happens if I don't like a pair? Returns? I see you can return them, but then I'm out of pocket D:

I think that this is a good idea but for a nieche that isn't Ozbargain (tight arses :D). Try marketing to an audience where young professionals is the main target. See "Happy Socks" brand for a successful (non-subscription) "colourful" socks example

    • Great feedback - thanks. You're right in that this isn't really the right niche, but I wanted to give it a shot to see if there was any interest. We're working to get Happy Socks signed up as a vendor, they're quite large so it may take a while before they'd be interested.

Returns - official policy is free return/exchange, but you're right that you'd be out of pocket for shipping ($3-4). We'll likely be eating the shipping for those that want to do returns, but if we have that as our policy, the service becomes too costly if everyone wants to swap. Once we grow and have lower costs, it's on the list of things to add. Since we're just starting, it's not feasible.

We hadn't planned on discounting the prepaid 3 month, but I'll put up a discount code here that has 3 uses - GDAY10OFF gives you $10 off the three month pre-paid, which lowers it to $65 total. It's permanent as well, not just the first subscription.

Thanks again for the feedback and do let me know if you have more feedback or suggestions.

      • Around the returns, the $3-4 postage back actually isn't too bad, maybe send with an "if you're not happy with these socks" envelope (not postage paid as you mentioned)? Is there a maximum period of time that you can return the socks (unused obviously)?

Having Happy Socks on board would be great for your business, as I understand it, they're quite a well-known brand (by silly sock connoisseurs :D). Are you looking at this business as a long-term thing, or are you looking to be acquired?

Thanks for the reply, I'm excited for you. I am interested in these kinds of online businesses, I'm a web developer by trade, so I want to run something like this in the future :-).

        • We've set the return at 15 days, but of course it's at our discretion. If someone contacts us later than that with unused socks that they don't like, we're likely to take them back. Customer satisfaction is more important than selling one more pair of socks.

Good luck in the future! My advice would be that it doesn't have to be perfect - think about what you can put out there to attract customers and then go on a continuous loop of improvement. If you have a look at our website today, it's completely different from two days ago because we found some designs and photography we liked better!

Part of the value in putting up a post here was seeing how people reacted and getting feedback. Even though most people here aren't in our niche, I want to know what our potential customers are thinking, or what we can do to sign-up some of the people here that never have heard of us.
