Suggest a Laptop 13" i7 16GB

Hi guys,

wondering if one could suggest an ultrabook with the following configuration:

  • 13" (12" or 14" is also acceptable)
  • intel i7 kobe or skylake
  • 16gb RAM
  • 256+ SSD.
  • Must not be Apple device.
  • Not willing to import

I've recently bought XPS 13 with the above configuration from Dell DFO but had to return it due to the "Coil whine" issue.

Currently considering Lenovo Carbon X1 as I believe it's the only one you can buy in Australia ?

Dell Latitude 14 7000 E7470 from dell outlet

Buy a cheap one and upgrade the RAM yourself from Amazon. If you're lucky, you might get one with 16GB RAM. Battery life on these things is like 8 hours with a FHD display and i5 processor.

  • The new Baby Lake Blade Stealth looks good. However, if price is not really a factor pickup the Surface Book.

  • Consider carefully do you need "ultrabook" as opposed to a slightly more bulky, a bit more conventional design 13in screen notebook. Generally going with a device classified as "ultrabook" you will pay more, and get much hotter running notebook with smaller, higher speed and noisier fans. Read some tests here, and check the "Emissions" paragraph (noise and heat emissions): http://www.notebookcheck.net

The "Coil whine" hard disk issue can be avoided by specifying (or upgrading) to SSD (solid state device, no moving parts, silent).

BTW, if you want to get a bit more specific advice you need to specify your budget.

    • It's the issue with Dell's motherboard and this issue had been reported to affect Lattitude models as well, that's why I would avoid Dell at this time.

The budget is under $3k. I would go for a surface book, but it's out of my budget :(

      Thanks

    • My X220 just dead due to a fan error after 5 yrs and 2 months usage. (I just need to replace cpu fan / cooling system. around 15 bucks from ebay)
      Best laptop ever.

    Macbook Pro

    • spot on, however price wise you are looking at $3500 for a i7/16gb/512PCE model. And you definitely need 512 to run bootcamp :(

  • Asus ZenBook
