Supplier Charging to Lodge Warranty Paperwork

So I have an Aurora Power One 4.2kw Inverter with my solar system, and it now has an issue that requires replacement (turns out they're dud inverters :-( ). I contacted the supplier and he's happily acknowledged the issue is a warranty replacement issue, but wants to slug me $176 for filling out the Warranty paperwork. I can't say I've ever been charged for warranty replacements or repairs and the supplier seems to think he is well in his rights to do so. I've lodged and enquiry with the ACCC to gain further clarification on his claims, but I thought I'd jump on here and see what experiences other's may have had in similar situation, and if anyone know more about it.

EDIT: Consumer & Business Services (SA) contacted me to advise me that it should not cost me a cent to have the replacement done. Have contacted the solar company with this information, waiting to hear back.

  • Sounds like BS. Let him know

    • I've let him know I've made an enquiry with the ACCC, he doesn't seem bothered.

      • Have it in writing and then lodge claim. Sounds like he may be bluffing.

  • +2

Go with fair trading first ACCC take ages to get back to you. Name and shame too!

  • do they have a facebook page? ask the question there.

    • Not that I can find… Will have a better look a bit later though

  • I think you should take him to small claims to recoup the cost in terms of time loss because of the items failure. I am sure youc an recoup reasonable costs…

    • I actually intend to do so when I receive some sort of confirmation back from CBS or the ACCC.

  • I assume that you want this guy to actually fit the inverter when he gets the replacement. This sounds like a de facto fitting charge so that he does not have to bear any costs associated with your claim.

OTOH, how much money are you losing in extra electricity charges by not having this fixed. It may be better to pay up and then argue later.

    • He'll have a contractor fit the replacement. Honestly couldn't tell you what I'm losing in extra electricity charges, but I'm expecting a call from CBS today and will see what they have to say about getting something back from the supplier. Now that he know's I've contacted CBS, he's become even more unreasonable.

      • Name & shame so we can stay away

  • If anyone was wondering, got this sorted, CBS has explained the law to the supplier and they are now cooperating. Still not happy with their conduct of the whole situation though.
