Upgrading The HDD on a PS3

I just bought PS3 super slim 12gb model and a mounting adapter on ebay for a replacement hard drive. Now I just need to decide what capacity is sufficient for my needs - can get 250gb for $22 or 640gb for $35, very cheap prices on 2.5" SATA drives on ebay.

Can most games be installed onto the hard drive?

The reason why I am asking is because I have been playing COD:Ghosts off the disc and the drive makes heaps of noise whilst the game is playing and I figure it is probably shortening the lifespan of the blu ray optics inside the machine.

I could not see an option in the menus on how/where to install to hard drive, like how in the xbox360 you can select game options from 'main menu' and then select ínstall to 'hard drive' for each and every game.

Is it standardised across all ps3 games or is it game dependent?

Ideally I would like to buy the largest capacity hard drive and install all future games onto the machine to reduce optical wear and noise.

Thanks.

you can only install certain games on the ps3 unlike the xbox360.
Your best bet would be to buy a cfw ps3 or download the game from psn for the ps3.

BTW damn cardinals losing to the bills cost me a $1. almost won the 16 multi

    • That sucks.
I think it would be cheaper to buy second hand games for around $5 each then at RRP from the PSN network via download. I'll just continue to use it and hope the laser doesn't wear out. If it does - well they are only going to get cheaper in the next few years as people upgrade LOL.

I read an ebay guide that just said the hard drive must be 5400rpm, so luckily I didn't purchase a 7200rpm drive which would have been an easy mistake to make!

I upgraded my ps3 a few months back to 500gb hdd 7200 rpm. It works fine with no issues.

        • Thanks. 7200rpm is more desirable and widely available. What model of PS3 do you have?

        • @wolfenator87: Same as yours, the slim 12 GB.

      • SSD works too

        • It will work. But does it give any meaning full performance improvement for the additional cost?

          @apple2016: for GT it does

  • Update: It's been a difficult process but I'm almost done. Finally managed to get the cover off and screwed in my replacement hard drive inside of the mounting bracket. The only problem is that the screws are quite large and have little rubber grommets on them which makes them stick out when I try to push the mounting slot attachment inside the PS3. I tightened these screws as much as possible and then reattempted to slide the mount it but stopped short of forcing it.

The only solution I have found was to attach the top 2 screws and leave the bottom 2 holes without screws so that it would be possible to slot into the space. The hard drive seemed to click into place but I haven't tested it yet.

I will be keeping my PS3 horizontally and it won't be moved around so I hopefully this won't cause an issue later on!
